  1. Are you an ETA? The person who received notice on 3/13 was a full grant applicant; so there could have been some hold up with the ETA awards (for example, determining the number of positions.) It seems like ETAs and Full grant apps have been notified seperately in many cases.

Here's the link to the spreadsheet so you can track if anyone posts their status:

It doesn't look like Israel has an ETA program. https://us.fulbrightonline.org/statistics_country_neafrica.html :-/

  2. That's really weird. Usually they do send out all the Full grant notifications together and all the ETA notifications together. If you've already talked to Jermaine about it I would say don't worry. Maybe you can ask him for a more definite date if you haven't talked to him recently?

  3. Hello, I'm new to the forum; it's nice to see there's people out there who are going through the same thing. To those who are finalists congratulations. I am currently a finalist for a full grant for research in Israel and like many of you am anxiously awaiting notification. I am wondering if anyone here can help me out as to when I should expect to receive notification.

I think you should call the Program Manager for the Near East/North Africa region ASAP. In the spreadsheet there's an Israel Acceptance from a month ago (3/13/2010). Maybe they sent it to the wrong address or it got lost in the mail? Either way they'll reissue the decision to you.

  4. I emailed Europe's coordinator today to ask her about all of the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia & Estonia).

    She said:

If we receive the budget confirmation from the State Department when expected, letters will go out for all of the Baltics on Thursday (4/15).

  5. Has anyone actually recieved their notification for Sub-Saharan Africa yet for the IIE? If so - was it just a letter or a package, or what? I am out of the country at the moment trying to tell people what to look for in the mail so any advice would be helpful.

On the spreadsheet Niger, South Africa, Ghana, and Malawi all received their notification. Two of those Accepted received a large envelope, the Alternates a regular business sized envelope.

  6. I think the Competition Statistics were just updated. The number totals are different. Weirdly the years are the same ('09-'10, '09-'10, '10-'11), so I'm not sure. Check and see.

P.S. - They just changed the years! New CSs are up. :)

  7. So Rachel Holskin says all decisions for the entire Europe/Eurasia region should all be sent out by April 15!!

I had e-mailed her asking about Spain, but also said I was interested in any other updates she might be able to share for the message board. This is what she said:

"Unfortunately, at this point, we have not yet received selections from the Commission in Spain, which means I have absolutely nothing to share. The only thing I can say is that as soon as I receive the selections, we'll be issuing the notification letters.

As for the forum, we all know about it here - it's a great way for applicants to discuss amongst each other! As for my particular world region, we're largely ahead of the game, and I anticipate all notifications to be mailed out by April 15th. In the meantime, I'm happy to respond to any inquiries."

It sounds like FSB decisions have been made for Spain, and she is just waiting on the commission's decision.

That's great news Sally! Thanks for finding out for the region in general. :) I've been contemplating getting Rachel some flowers for all she has done for us. She's always been so cordial and helpful when we call her. Even though she's probably getting 10 calls a day asking the same thing.

  8. After reading your post I got inspired to call up Mr. Akeley's office and badger them about our notification date. The guy wasn't in but his secretary said, "We're just waiting to hear from them." Couldn't even confirm that we'd hear in April! I wish the Asia-Pacific region had someone like Rachel Holskin or anyone who's just more open about our statuses.

I just talked to Rachel and she was super nice. Let me know that decisions for Lithuania still hadn't been made and I'll hear in mid-late April.

  9. I found out yesterday that I will be going to Russia on an ETA - I'm very excited. Congrats to everyone who has heard, and good luck to those who are still waiting.

Congrats! You're the only Fulbright applicant for Russia that I've noticed - if you could put your information on the spreadsheet for next year's applicants that would be great!

  10. Confusing to me, because the website says for 2009-2010, there were 26 applicants, whereas the info sheet contradicts that. I thought that jump from 26-70 would explain the delay, and I think it refers to application year. It's hard to imagine that there was another significant jump beyond 100...

Not sure if this helps but I know the Competition Statistics for OUR year (2010-2011 Fulbright) will be online in early April.

  11. Has anyone asked a program manager when/how often the FSB meets? It seems like that is a bottle neck for the countries that have already selected their principal candidates.

I'm not so sure it's a bottleneck. My program manager told me that my country hadn't made decisions yet. It could be that the country itself is slowly going through applications. And Egypt last year didn't let it's candidates know until May/June but that wasn't FSB's fault. (as far as I know)

  12. Hey Guys,

In my Fulbright statement I mentioned that I would be taking language courses in the summer prior to going abroad. Can I expect Fulbright to pay for the summer courses? I heard that Fulbright doesn't disperse funds until one month into our time abroad.

  13. Welcome! Did you apply for a grant?

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. He can always try next year. Do you know if the FSB has made their final decisions for everyone? I had the impression that we would not receive notification until mid April or so.

    Hey Schatzie,

If you check the spreadsheet (https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=taWW8xiKve1Tm6Ow6bHdhYA&hl=en) you'll notice that there are three Germany ETA notifications posted. An Alternate and two Acceptances. So my guess is you should be hearing right about now.

  14. In answer to my own question, it looks like it's between 750-1000 euros per month (http://www.fulbright.de/togermany/grants/student.html).

Does anyone have any experience with whether or not this is enough? --A colleague of mine is on Fulbright in the US and has said something like, she has already managed to spend her entire scholarship.

    -jim

My friend who did a Fulbright in Spain actually used her monthly stipend to support both herself and her significant other. He wasn't her fiancee then or her husband, so he wasn't counted as a dependent. If two people can do it - certainly one can.
