  1. Guys, could you stop messing with the color and the formatting on the spreadsheet?! I've been trying to keep it consistent and other people keep changing what I do!

If you do change things.. these are my requests:

    1. Don't use fluorescent colors unless you're highlighting something that needs special attention. It's blinding and unnecessary.

    2. Don't make the word "rejected" fire engine red, and "accepted" bright green. Can't we be more subtle? Have some compassion!

    3. Don't make the columns wider. I'm talking to you Mac users. I know it shows up much differently when you're using Safari or Firefox. But, for those of us as work using Internet Explorer 7, keep the columns as narrow as possible, please!! Otherwise I -- I mean we -- have to scroll right a whole lot and it's tedious.

    4. Don't color code new categories. We've got enough colors to deal with.

    ----

Ok that's it. However DO feel free to add new categories that you think would be especially useful (postmark date, and "which address" were both good additions).

Anyway, if you really want to change something fundamental that would be tedious for someone to change back... e-mail me first : sallyatiemadrid@gmail.com

Also, note that there's a chat function on the spreadsheet, and you can talk to others who are viewing at the same time. I might actually be online the same time as you are, so you can just go in the chat and mention your proposed change before you make it. Or you can run it by whoever else is in there and they can at least give you an opinion on your potentially garish color choices :P

    Thank you!

Hilarious instructions Sally hilarious! Definitely needed though - thanks.

P.S. - I was one of those MAC users, didn't know it showed up differently on PCs. Now I do. ;)

  2. I talked to Rachel Holskin, Europe's coordinator, about an hour ago. She told me that Lithuania has not made their decisions yet and will not until the end of March. She also said I should recieve notification in mid to late April. I actually feel quite relieved - it's really strange. Up until this morning I've been checking my temporary mail twice a day and calling my parents frantically at my permanent address in order to get them to check THEIR mail. Now that I know that I won't know for another month I can relax, get out of my senioritis slump, and get some work done!

  3. Now that so many Europe people are getting responses, I will be irritating and repeat my question about Wednesday mailings -- any indication as to whether letters for European countries are getting sent out only on Wednesdays, as last year, or any weekdays? I'm a full grant applicant for Denmark.

I don't think there's any way for any of us to answer that question. Either IIE/Rachel would have say yes they mail out on Wednesday's or all of the Europe grantees (Bulgaria, Germany and Austria so far) would need to check the postmarks on their letters to let us know.

  4. ..."But then she wrote "It does not mean you have been awarded a grant.""

Totally. Every email I've gotten so far has reminded me of this- and it makes me sigh a little. biggrin.gif

I haven't heard a thing from Rachel Holskin ( in charge of Europe and Eurasia) since I got word that I'm finalist. But I don't envy receiving multiple official looking letters - never knowing if this was the one.

  5. FYI:

I contacted Rachel Holskin about when Latvia Finalists can expect to hear the final word and she said that the post in Latvia has made its selections but are still awaiting clearence from the Foreign Scholarship Board. We should find out in early April.

    Cheers!

I'm guessing Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia will all find out around the same time. It seems like a long time to wait but I hope it will fly by!

  6. Last year, hardly anyone got e-mails. It was just snail mail. Although for some the letter came from abroad, others it came from IIE. I think it might depend on whether the country you applied to has its own Fulbright Comission or not.

I noticed on @Sally's spreadsheet that someone got the grant for Austria yesterday. Congrats whoever you are. It's even more exciting that it came by email.

  7. Must be the first one to find out... I'm a Bulgaria ETA finalist, found out today that I won the grant. Good luck to everyone!

    Hi mcgov36,

Congrats! Did it come to your college mailing address or your permanent address? Was it a thin envelope? I'm on Spring Break now and can't wait to get back to campus to check my mail.

  8. I'm so excited that it's finally March! Some of the finalists from the 2008-2009 round heard back about their Fulbright status as early as March 16th! Anyway I just wanted to remind everybody to use Sally's fabulous Google spreadsheet! You can fill in information like the country you applied to and the date of notification.

Please remember that the spreadsheet is only for FINAL notifications - so whether or not you've been accepted/declined/waitlisted for a grant NOT if you're a finalist for the country. I think the sheet will be really helpful for next year's group - so they can see when to expect notification from their country. Not that it'll make them any less frazzled. ;)

  9. Not sure! One a somewhat related note, I just had an email exchange with a 2009 grantee for Spain (which is the country I'm a finalist for). She said she didn't find out her result until late April!! She said she got her notification by mail. So, to other Spain applicants, expect a long wait ahead of you :(

    Hey Sally,

I hope this helps! My friend got a ETA Fulbright to Spain for '07-'08. She found out on Monday, April 2nd 2007.

  10. Greetings, I'm an ETA finalist trying to plan my summer... is it true that (if we get selected) there may be a required pre departure training in DC at some point in the summer? I feel like I read or heard this somewhere... If yes, any idea what dates it would be scheduled or what dates it was last year? Thanks!

I did some searching. I know that each Fulbright 'region' has a separate Fulbright Orientation.

Last year the Fulbright group for the Americas (i.e. Latin America and the Caribbean I assume) met from June 25-27. http://fulbright.state.gov/orientation/wha-ch/orientation-schedule

Middle East and North Africa met from June 24-26 http://fulbright.state.gov/orientation/af-nea-sca/orientation-schedule/middle-east-and-north-africa-orientation-schedule

South and Central Asia from June 24-26 http://fulbright.state.gov/orientation/af-nea-sca/orientation-schedule/south-and-central-asia-orientation-schedule

    Sub-Saharan Africa from June 24-26 http://fulbright.state.gov/orientation/af-nea-sca/orientation-schedule/sub-saharan-africa-orientation-schedule

The site wasn't working perfectly so I couldn't access the dates for Western Europe and China.

  11. http://chronicle.com/article/The-Big-Lie-About-the-Life-of/63937/

My friend recently sent me this article querying what I thought he should do now. Should he continue with his Sankrit studies and possibly end up with grad debt and no job after several years? It's an interesting article and ties together several bad things that I've previously been told to watch out for when applying / going to grad school. But are these things true? What are your opinions?

  12. We should start a Google spreadsheet where we list out all the countries and people can say when they got their notification. That way at least next year's applicants can have a reference!

Update: Actually, I just came across this thread about 2009-10 fulbright awards. Lots of people posted there when they got their final notifications. It seems like the vast majority were in April or May. The earliest seemed to be toward the end of March.

You can read all 58 pages of the discussion for yourself here!

Trust me Sally I have read all 58 pages! The trouble is that even within those pages there are references to people who posted on March 12th for instance but say that their friend got a Fulbright acceptance in the mail weeks ago which would put that acceptance in late-February. But I do think you're right, most of the acceptances come in March/April.

But I think your Google spreadsheet idea would be awesome! How would we go about starting that?

  13. I have a Kindle 2 and I mostly use it for pleasure reading like kahlan_amnell ( I love Legend of the Seeker / Goodkind btw!). I love my Kindle to pieces! The selection through the Kindle is much larger and slightly cheaper than the Nook. I've heard that the iPad will have an iBookstore but the selection comes nowhere near Amazon's reach. So I think I'll keep my Kindle for now. Plus the iPad, if you get it with the same wireless capabilities to download materials that the Kindle has, is $600 bucks! Three times the price of the Kindle. If you get the iPad with the keyboard attachment then you might as well just buy a Macbook since it comes to the same price.

  14. I wish there was a rank-ordered calendar through which we could see which countries decide in February, which in March, which in April etc. I know it varies from year-to-year but this is frustrating not knowing when notice could be coming over a span of four months.

  15. Yes it owuld be interesting to know what countries people have been rejected from. Also, it seems like more rejects so far have been ETAs. Is this true?

Sorry to be so scientific about it. I'm sure I'll get my reject any minute now.

The two newest rejections on Twitter are from the UK (Research) and Korea (ETA).

  16. Three people have announced on Twitter that they are through to the next round. As for me - still no e-mail! Color me concerned....

As far as I can tell the three people informed were notified by their advisors not through a formal email from IIE.

  17. Does anyone know around what time we will receive e-mail notification today?

It depends on when the advisers received notification. If they just got access to the finalist list today then we won't be emailed until tomorrow. I contacted my adviser, she has the list and guess what she told me when I asked for my status? She said she can't tell me whether or not I'm a finalist! IIE apparently says the advisers aren't supposed to notify the students in advance. But I know someone whose adviser told him he was a finalist for Hungary's Fulbright. :(

  18. Does anyone know when the Competition Statistics will be updated? I'd like to know what I'm working against. I know applications to graduate schools have jumped significantly this year but what about Fulbright?
