  1. hi, it's an insightful post you made. Right now, I have a job offer from one of the well known companies as well, where I will be working on machine learning. I also have applied to PhD programs this year but so far only rejections. Any way, ohnorobot, you said you built a relationship with a professor but you will be doing only a master. Why? In computer science, most master students only take courses and maybe do some research based projects that are part of the courses. And it sounds like in industry, a master degree isn't helpful any way, particularly if you already have a job. Or, are you doing a master not in the field of computer science?
  2. Has UCSD sent out all acceptances already? :-(
  3. dat_nerd, have you been interviewed by any of the schools you applied?
  4. Has any one who had interview with Cornell heard back yet? Q_Q What research area??
  5. I am not sure, just guessing based on last year's result.
  6. I suppose all the acceptances for CSD (excluding HCI) have been sent out?
  7. Hi, as part of my application, I have set up a website including more information about my profile like applications and industry/research experience. However, up till now, only one professor from a school has visited my website and download some stuff. I am quite worried now because this school is the highest ranked on my list and I have no visits from my match or safety schools. So, the question is: is it true that admitted applicants (almost) always have their websites visited by some people from their admitting schools prior to receiving offers? I am just curious, and hope some more experienced people can shed some light on this. thanks
  8. I have a quick question. I think I have missed some calls from professors (guessed from the regions the missed calls were from). However, I am not sure why I didn't get follow up emails. For interviews, is it always (or nearly always) the case that you first get an email first to set up the interview time or it's just on the fly (they just call you whenever they like it and start interviewing you)? please shed some light. thanks so much
  9. I think it depends on the school. For instance, as far as I know (could be wrong), at Berkeley, all students who get admitted for CS PhD would've been interviewed. Hope some one can clarify more.
  10. sorry if I didn't explain myself clear. I am currently an undergrad, and when I said "advisor", I meant my boss (who indeed got a phd) at a research lab.
  11. Hi. thanks for all the replies. Nevertheless, if I base the quality of a conference/journal on my advisor's opinion, that would be too subjective, right? I mean, I am applying to grad schools. So, naturally, I would like to know how strong CS schools in general would view a conference/journal. please help thanks
  12. how does a tier 1 conference differ from a tier 2 one? Is it really necessary the case that a paper from a tier 1 is "better" than one from tier 2?
  13. well, for instance, ipdps is ranked top tier in one ranking, but second tier in another. How much is it actually worth? Also, can you any one tell me the tier level for siam journal of scientific computing (sisc)?
  14. Hi, I am just curious. How do you evaluate the tier/quality of a conference/journal?
