  1. I also received the FLAS email from Chicago. I'm applying to do Mexican historical archaeology, but none of the languages seem directly applicable. For example in Latin American languages they have Portuguese, Yucatec Mayan & Kiche Mayan, etc. I talked to one of the Meso grad students I know and he told me to try for Yucatec Mayan since it's used a lot in Meso studies. But not sure...? Still debating if I should waste my time on it. PS - I am the SUNY Albany admit. lol
  2. Thank you! (and thanks to anthamanda too). I applied around Nov. 1, so maybe that's the reason. I applied to UCR as well, but the history program... that word limit was insane. I had to cut out about 1.5 paragraphs to get it down to size, I was pissed. I don't know how strict it is, but I tried to adhere to their guidelines just so I wouldn't be disqualified for whatever reason. Good luck!
  3. The deadline is Jan 15.... I don't really understand it myself, to be honest. I've been baffled by it all day, but hey, I'm not complaining! Also, I don't know if any of you are applying there, but maybe be on the lookout if you are.
  4. Thank you all! Yes, here's to hoping that the other programs notify soon as well...
  5. Thank you! My POI was Louise Burkhart, but Dr. Masson is the one that will be advising me. Glad to hear she's nice!
  6. Thank you! This totally caught me off guard today. Good luck to everyone, and hang in there!
  7. I am so surprised by this!!! Received an email notification this morning from the University of Albany, SUNY to check my admissions status online. Logged on & was surprised to see an acceptance to the PhD program in Anthropology (Archaeology)... so soon! Funding info to follow. I'm in a state of disbelief right now because it's still December.
  8. I absolutely know that show... I've got a 5 year old at home! Eriatarka is a song from the Mars Volta. My favorite song from my favorite band. It's also useful because no one else really has it, so I never have to come up with an alternative name when creating accounts. My pic is simple. My favorite flower has always been the tulip, and I wanted something bright and pretty.
  9. Thank you to the last 2 posters... I didn't realize there was any wiggle room with sending the recs in. However, my final recommender just informed me that all my letters are in! I can breathe easily for now All done.
  10. Hey all! I worked on my apps every wknd through October, cuz I knew I was gonna be slammed with work at the end of this quarter, and I'm glad I did. I had a weird situation with my recommenders... 1 submitted letters like immediately, 1 did it during the last week before initial deadlines, and the last... well... I've been having to pester the heck out of this recommender because they won't get to it until the DAY OF. This last recommender is keeping my stomach in knots, but is very well-known in the field so I need that letter. Also several of the links emailed to my recommenders have expired within a few weeks, so it creates a problem of them having to re-request them. Anyone having issues with this or letters in general? I'm also in the Berkeley and Chicago camp on this thread I saw 1 other say they were applying to U Mich... I'm applying for their Anthro/Hist program, which seems cool. Other schools are all listed below in my signature. Mostly reach schools but I figure, what the heck? You'll never know unless you try. Good luck to everyone!
  11. I'm interested in historical archaeology. I'm applying to the PhD in Anthropology & History at Michigan. Have you looked into it?
  12. Whoa, yeah, that is crazy. Do you think it has anything to do with performance?
  13. I recently spoke to a few faculty in my home school's department and the consensus seems to be that a combined GRE score of 300 is a common cut-off point for determining funding. But again, admissions seems to be so subjective... I wouldn't get hung up on the GRE.
  14. Hey arch peeps!! I'm applying to study historical archaeology (in general) - colonial period Mexico. Got the schools down below... mesoarch: if you're applying to work with Bill Saturno, word is he's got a ton of funding bc of San Bartolo. As far as student funding, I don't know... I heard it's hard to come by there, but that's prob the case with most places right?
  15. You know, honestly, I don't have the inside scoop I just assume they're all pretty competitive. Tulane definitely looks awesome!
  16. Hey there, 1st time applicant. Would love a PhD program, but also applying to a few MA's as backup. I'm a bit torn between 2 fields actually, and am considering possibly applying to schools in both areas (we'll see). I love both Mesoamerican archaeology (especially Teotihuacan) and also historical archaeology, broadly focused on Mexico and/or US borderlands. Really interested in gender & sexuality as well, and how that manifests itself in the archaeological record. Currently working on my list: Berkeley, ASU, Tulane, ...Stanford & Columbia are huge maybes.
