  1. Unless its strictly forbidden, I would reserve jeans for days that you might have to teach both in the lecture hall AND in the lab. Spending money on things that will make you look snappy will look GREAT the first few weeks. After all the chemical mishaps of a few sections of undergrads wears through your lab coat and you discover multiple holes in your nice clothing you will wish you had started wearing something tougher. Jeans, a polo shirt, socks and non slip brown tennis style shoes.... Save the khaki's and/or dress pants for non lab days.
  2. I'm 38, turning 39 in two and a half week. My son is 12 in one and a half weeks. Took from 93-12 to get the bachelors, Going to one of three places for my PhD starting this fall. Dude with 5 kids: that's damn impressive!
  3. Have you checked the prospective student tab at the following web address? http://www.mymichigantech.mtu.edu/ This has the status of your application along with the other info you turned in for the app. HTH.
  4. No, but I wish I would have applied there if they are going to have funds to give out.
  5. Same boat here. I'm still waiting to hear something... anything from all the places in my sig. Limbo... its what's for dinner.
  6. Well, in case any of you are still subscribed to this thread, surprise! They still haven't updated anything. Joy.
  7. "If two candidates favored a return to slavery, or wanted to stone adulterers, you wouldn't cast your ballot for the one with the better position on health care." Thank you for the article. Very concise.
  8. This. Is exactly what you are supposed to believe. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, the one fending off all of the appeals and legal challenges to the Patriot Act, which have to be done anonymously because its a felony to speak out about being served a government self written search warrant (never you mind the 'congress shall make no law" restricting your speech). All those appeals, all those complaints, all done here. In the US. In our courts by our OWN citizens. Volunteer at a legal aid center for school that happens to cater to African/Somali immigrants? Guess who just became a possible 'combatant', a likely 'aggresor'? YOU. Since its inception the Patriot Act has been modified to make 'combatants' anyone within social or commercial circles with racially profiled suspects. Think of it as the .gov's own six degrees of Kevin Bacon game. Foreign policy targets abroad include the children of any suspected 'combatant'. If you are willfully ignorant, passing this off as "it will never happen to me" or "it only happens overseas" I sincerely hope you aren't close to or interact with anyone that may be on a profiling list. You may be in for a real life shock. NDAA and a beefed up Patriot Act are real. Am I mad that the prez didnt get rid of Guantanamo? Sure. Am I upset he broke nearly every campaign promise related to the disabled, the working poor, and up until very recently the LBGTQ folks? You betchya. As mad as I am that he took the illegitimate son of Bush/Cheney, the patriot act and instead of abolishing this piece of trash ***as he promised***, he strengthened it and renewed it? Damn right. Almost as mad as I am that he sent a letter written into congressional record by a fellow democrat that said he would not sign the NDAA unless it had a provision allowing the prez to lock up *anyone* without any due process... then told the media it was a real shame that had made it onto the bill, and he would sign the NDAA but in protest. They are both career politicians and liars. Lie to me about being in bed with business. That's been happeneing for longer than I've been alive. But don't lie to me about why both the pimply faced kid working at the local Kwik-E-Mart *and* the local reporter who covered a story on the kids senior project in high school about foreign aid are now missing and no one knows where they are. Or when asking the Minneapolis cops about who broke into and trashed the house down the street why they think it was the FBI, but they can't comment on the case officially. Dont lie to me about these things. These things are happening, right now. It's all very domestic. Keep that in mind when you vote in a few weeks. Cling to any perceived or preconceived notion you want to about feelgood domestic issues... but remember that unless you burn with hatred of the power of the sun over these issues, they will not keep you warm in the winter time in a drafty midwestern prison.
  9. Only if by persecuting you also mean the other candidate, the one that has added more American citizens to his "kill list" (per the story in the NYTimes) and whose former press secretary made comments defending murdering the teenaged children of a suspected terrorist... two weeks *after killing the terrorist in question in a drone strike. Romney's only plus is that he hasnt held the office yet to screw it up, but all poor jokes and wars on 'women' and 'class warfare' aside, he hasn't murdered any children this election season. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/29/world/obamas-leadership-in-war-on-al-qaeda.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1& http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/10/how-team-obama-justifies-the-killing-of-a-16-year-old-american/264028/ I still stand by my original post, if you vote for either one you are a tool. But at least those who are voting republican this time around can vote with a cleaner conscience then their democratic kill/indefinite detention party bretheren.
  10. I read it. You talk about two parties, 12 points and the only mistake I made was that you were quoting some r-tard, and not presenting the proposed, quoted example as your own thought but rather that of another person which you 'know'. You used that quoted example to back up your statement that different people believe different things. While I may agree that we do indeed believe in different things, your quoted example is still asinine. Speaking of stupid or foolish things to say, you may have hit the mark by admitting on a public forum that you have "convinced enough girls to get abortions in my life. Recently too." Without backup context that kind of makes you sound like an ass. But not nearly as much as calling someone out someones sexual potency over the usage of hyphens. I use r-tard not to soften the blow of calling out someones apparent lack of mental faculties, but because after hearing Stan call his dad an r-tard instead of a 'retard' its been hilarity ever since. Surely as a lingustics major you can appreciate finding emotional content in certain words and/or phrases?
  11. Whether accidental or not, either you've never seen another human being outside of your family naked, or your not very keen on percentages and math. Hopefully you aren't related to the r-tard that keeps asking questions on the posted results page about every freaking speech pathology program in the nation. Since no method of control can guarantee 100% pregnancy free sex (although you can get a very high percentage with combined methods) it is downright foolish to characterize **hundreds or thousands** of people you've never met as 'irresponsible and reckless'.
  12. Indefinite Detention Warrantless Surveillance/PATRIOT Act Gitmo Racial Profiling in Fighting Terrorism Torture Killing of US citizens by Army drones under the governments direction And these are just SOME of the things that were supposed to get fixed/never happen under a democratic party presisdent. No matter which you vote for, the (D)ouche or the tu®d sandwich (thank you South Park), we the people are the ones that are going to take it in the shorts. Anyone who says they are informed of the issues that votes for one of the establishment candidates is a tool who is oblivious to the situation either willfully or out of faithful desperation. Remember that as the next president continues to sign off on extensions of the Patriot Act so that agents can write self written search warrants and detain you indefinitely with no lawyer, no rule of law... not even a dime for a phone call.
  13. Although, at this point if it *is* still going to happen for this semester, look for my new blog entitled: How to stay at the library until closing time, then live out of your car for awhile.
  14. My latest news: Tuesday, August 21, 2012 11:08 AM We may yet have an answer for you for this semester. I just checked with a committee member, who said that she gave your file to another faculty member for review. I will check with them to see how the review is going, and get back to you. Sincerely, (Person whom I have pestered quite a bit but she'll still talk to me, name removed), Graduate Secretary I am not in town. I am still in Wisconsin, moving to Minnesota to look for work. I also applied to a few other places. MichTechU was the absolutely nicest about the their rejection, including tips on strengthening my application, Iowa State was an email, all others used the mail or the phone with the exception of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, whom I had to call to get an update and was asked if I had gotten a letter or notice of acceptance. I answered "no" and the young female voice on the phone said "then clearly we don't want you." And before I could even breathe to thank her for her time, she hung up. So compared to my local alternative, having to wait seems not at all bad. Just chugging along, hoping that I don't get trapped into a job and having to get a masters instead of a PhD with the "friendly locals".
  15. Well, just to update anyone still following: August 10th the dept secretary told me she'd get back to me. No response since and classes started today. I'm kinda bummed.
  16. Ahh. I would have called it a personnel change if the person was replaced on a temporary or permanent basis. But from all outward appearances, no one is stepping in to take the persons work. They are awaiting the persons return to the department.
  17. I'm unaware of any 'insane personnel change' that might be going on. Also, I have emails from the system that tell me when the initial was received (2/20) and when all the materials were in (3/5) again, according to the system. It wasnt until much later that luckily someone outside the dept returned my missives and informed me that something was missing. I'd say the lag occured during April, May, and June. Which, around here, tend to be seen as some pretty important times for shoring up your decision based on offers made, etc. However, as I said just above your post, I have discovered that someone in the dept was having some medical issues. So this type of delay was making more sense. I don't want to pass judgement or anything with this kind of knowledge. I don't know how reliable the info is yet, but no amount of my anxiety is worth worrying over if any part of these med problems are true. I have had family members with major med issues similar to this and I don't wish that on anyone. To answer your question, this is for a PhD.
  18. I have. There evidently might be some serious medical issues with the chief decision maker in the process. Until he/she recovers most things are on hold. This is of course told to me on the sly and not official by any stretch.... but it makes a little sense.
  19. I too went the long route. Had the whole meet someone, get married, buy a house, have a kid, get divorced, lose the house, get visitation with the kid then go back and finish route. If you don't mind me asking, what butt busting does it take post bachelors? I took the GRE after it went to percentages and scored 65% Verbal, 69% Quant, 4.0/6.0 on my written and did get that GPA up to 3.0 by graduation (with my only fluff/filler/elective outside of scheduled coursework being Differential Equations with Linear Algebra) with three letters of req. My results have been mixed to say the least with only one school outright rejecting me, one that is telling me its still going to take weeks, and a handful that couldnt even be bothered to tell me I was out. (Fewer more aggravating things than hearing someone say to you over the phone "if you haven't heard from us, then we don't want you") As a fellow long roader, please tell me. What else does it take? Do I treat this like a job where I pester them until I get resolution? Am I supposed to give them extra slack because it will hurt me if I don't? I've posted in the "waiting" section as well but what does it take to get into these places? If there's a secret handshake or something I'm missing, tell me please.
  20. I am in contact with the admissions dept far more than they are comfortable with, I assure you. I appreciate your candor, and will take the complete lack of other responses as a hint that this is to be expected or that I have somehow hosed things up too badly for anyone to want to comment on. Thank you Usmivka for your help.
  21. Never settle for a plain, boring, white labcoat.

Weeks. School starts for my elementary school aged son August 14th in the Lincoln area. Please for the love of all thats holy tell me that this is not what regularly happens during these admission cycles. If I'm not admitted this year and I try again next year I don't know if I can handle this kind of last minute, pick everything up and move 500 miles just before school is supposed to start, let alone already have my son behind in his schooling. Thanks much for any advice or support, -dk9
