  1. I am the same way. I think you're good. I think as long as you have a firm grasp on your interests and the directions you want to go, you'll be fine. You don't need to say a specific plan with specific independent and dependent variables, especially if you're coming straight out of UG, in my honest opinion. Maybe if you were in the hard sciences...
  2. I sent them thank you cards and gift cards to Starbucks (there's one on campus near their hall).
  3. http://www.imperialages.com/ I haven't really gotten into it yet, but I found it today.
  4. Yeah, I agree. We would be naive to think that absolutely zero faculty members are coming to this forum. Not that I don't already monitor my behavior online, but that's just yet another reason I try to keep things both anonymous and civil. This is really the beginning of our professional careers, so I treat it sort of like I do at work when I'm online in the sense that I know my boss can have access to my internet history at any time. I think faculty members who engage in conversation are the most helpful. I much prefer your approach, the participant observer, rather than a pure lurker.
  5. I hope you didn't misunderstand my comment. I specifically said you were insightful. Ah well.
  6. Look, I don't have a horse in this race (though I do love a good cliche), but everyone is just a little too strong there. I'm sorry you feel singled out, or so it is coming across in this thread, by the majority of us here. The truth is, I don't post a lot about my perspective on things because I know people like LainieB and faculty are here. While that certainly doesn't bother me because faculty has been particularly insightful, I think this solidifies the assumption we all had: faculty members do read these forums, for good or for bad. Therefore, I personally don't feel inclined to get into a big ideological debate and discuss my (albeit limited) research because it would be pretty obvious who I am to anyone on an adcomm. This silence doesn't mean I'm agreeing or disagreeing with anyone; rather, I'd just like to stay a little lower profile during the admissions process. Also, I want to point out that not everyone cares if you come from sociology or not. My first few years of ug were in polisci, so I'm a keen proponent of changing fields. Additionally, one of my favorite gradcafers has a non-soc background. Anyway, just wanted to point that out. I will say that if you are going to criticize a discipline or subd, then you should be read up on it; however, I realize that you were criticizing the nomenclature rather than the discipline itself.
  7. This is the second time in 24 hours that someone has said sociology is in the humanities.
  8. Yeah, the new thread was a clutch idea. I don't care if you guys duke it out over ideology, but I'd like to add the personal attacks make some of us a little uncomfortable. At some point the threads go from discourse to Internet trolling.
  9. Alright. This wasn't what I was looking for, but I thought it could be helpful:
  10. The last ND visit had something like 5 spots and 15 visitors if I remember correctly. I'll try to find where I read that so I can provide accurate data. So, don't rely on those numbers.
  11. Which school? People have posted their experiences at interviews at various schools. I've heard different things between Emory versus Notre Dame, for instance. I also agree with what erinvechols said regarding competing with those with MA/MS. There are different expectations depending on your degree.
  12. Oh also, I would honestly write a quick email that simply states you were accepted to attend <x> conference.. presenting <x>. (Maybe include a .pdf attachment that states the same thing so they can print it out). If the page is correct, the deadline was only about 5 days ago. Anything helps! I resent my transcripts to a couple schools with later deadlines because my last semester was a 4.0 in all soc courses.
  13. Very strange! Well, I know they were still accepting applications in December because mine wasn't turned in until then.. and she reached out to me around mid-to-late December to let me know that they were missing something or other.. and asked for me to email it to her. If I had to guess, they likely changed the deadline at some point. So some pages say 12/1/2012 whereas others say 1/1/2013 or 1/15/2013. I actually was talking to my gradcafe pal about UF because ORIGINALLY the deadline said January.. then one day it suddenly changed to December. So, I panicked and was super bummed that I couldn't send in the rest of my application materials. Then I randomly re-checked sometime in December.. and that's when I noticed the deadline was back in January again. It was all very confusing! By the way, I sent you a message!
  14. There's no penalty for turning them early! It means you're on the ball.
  15. Oh, you guys are all sociology as well!
  16. I applied to UF, but they changed the deadline for my program multiple times. The deadline I found most recently said 1/1/2013. However, I received emails in December from one of the grad coordinators. I'm assuming they were looking at the files then (at least to some degree?). Edit: Make that 1/15/2013! Funding is 1/1/2013, though. http://soccrim.clas.ufl.edu/graduate/sociology/admissions/faqs/#deadline1 What is the deadline for my application? All application materials must be received before January 15th. Materials arriving past the deadline may cause your application to not be reviewed.
  17. Congrats! You should go post on the acceptances thread (more organized for future cohorts) and post any stats you feel like sharing! I almost applied to U of Washington, but then changed my mind. Great program!
  18. Hmm. I really thought we might see UT acceptances today. On to next week, I suppose.. Monday is a holiday so I don't expect much happening for the next few days.
  19. Best: I can't remember all, but I know I liked UT-Austin (could upload SOP after submission) and NCSU. Worst: Argh tough choice. Brown was annoying, but the departments where you had to mail certain things and submit certain things online were even worse. (UF/MSU).
  20. That's awesome!
  21. You're on fire today!
  22. Up to you guys! It would be nice to have a thread where people only post acceptances/rejections along with whatever stats they are willing to give.. just for reference. This can be more of a chat thread.
  23. Oh congrats! Wasn't that one of your top choices? So awesome!
  24. All of this. My husband has these preconceived ideas about where I should go based purely on geographic location without regard for my research interests (!) or the prospective employment opportunities. I'm just hoping one of my top two choices come through so we can avoid the "big discussion" about where to move. ('Cause he knows he auto-loses if I get in either top choice.)
