The importance of a campus visit

Question

Posted

The question is simple; should I go to the campus visit after I admitted?

One university invited me to attend the campus visit. Although I have been accepted this graduate program, the existence of other applications and limited supports for travel expenses make me hesitate the attendance of the campus visit. Does it sound nonsense to consider this invitation? Visiting professors and searching for housing issues deserve to make an effort to visit the university early?

If they're a school you're highly considering I think it would be worth it to visit it. If you go there and don't like the culture at least you'd know before you have accepted. It would also provide you the chance to look around the area and see if you could envision yourself commuting or living there and to ask questions that are more appropriate on person than online/via phone. You can also read body language better in person.

Depends. Have you ever met the people you'd be working with? Have you interacted with the grad students in the program? Personally, I attended a PhD program that I didn't visit (I did do other campus visits though). It helped that I'd met the PI before and applied there specifically because I wanted to work with him. (Of course, I also attended the one school for undergrad that I didn't visit...)
