Waitlisting

I was just wondering if anyone knew the subtle nuances of the waitlist...namely how many students are usually on it. I know it must vary from university to university and from program to program, but does anyone have any experience in hearing how many students are usually placed on it and maybe even the likelihood of getting a good news calls once you're placed on one? I guess I just got placed on one today and the program only admits 3 students, so I'm trying to figure out the likelihood of acceptance at this point. Thanks!

I think it greatly varies by program, but generally there are a few people on the waiting list so the most important part is where you are ranked on the list. I was on the waiting list for Penn State's Social program last year but all applicants accepted their offers I was also on the waiting list for Depaul's social program but was eventually rejected.

This year I have been notified I am on the waiting list at 4 programs so far, although based on past experience I am not expecting much. I hope you have better luck than I did!

You could actually just make a polite inquiry about your standing/ and whether or not they anticpate taking any students off the waitlist to give you a better idea. I was waitlisted last year at place who let me know I was on the waitlist, but it was really unlikely, and another place who just let me know directly the number of accepted/openings/ and my position on the waitlist.

@ Alli Are you waitlisted at Depaul (experimental-social) this year? I haven't heard from them and didn't know if waitlist hadn't been issued or if they just haven't sent the rejection yet.

I didn't apply to Depaul this year as PJ Henry was my POI and he has left the university...

I was just wait listed yesterday. I asked about what place I was on the wait list and they said they havent determined that. They said my chances were good, and I really hope they are!

Well my POI says my odds are pretty good. But, the Grad Director said that there are 15 people on the wait list which is scary for me. It seems that i wont have a chance if i am lower on the list :( I got my hopes up for nothing :(

I was recently placed on a waitlist and I emailed to thank them for considering me and I asked if it was possible for them to tell me where I am on the list.

She got back to me with the response a day later....seems like it is ok to ask..FYI.

P.S.

This was DePaul, and I am in the "middle". Now of course I am wondering if I am in the middle of a 20 person waiting list or in the middle of a 4 person waiting list!? Arrgh!

I am concerned about this as well. I have read of several applicants who have been waitlisted at DePaul. How big is this waitlist?! Even if I am "high up on the list", there are only two spots.

Would it be appropriate to ask how many applicants are on the waitlist?

I am not sure if it would be appropriate to ask...but I think it is inappropriate for them not to tell us. I realize they want to play it safe and have good people on back up in case a few people decline...but this list sounds rather long...(aka- hopeless for us stuck in the middle). However, she did say, we don't usually get to your position, but we have in past years. ?!?!

Any advice, anyone?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've decided to email my two POI at Penn State not so much to ask where I stand/how many people are on the list, but more so updating them on what I've been doing lately and basically to re-emphasize my desire to go there. Since it was so long ago that I actually applied, I figured that simply updating them would look good and it would make sense, plus it would get my name in their heads I guess.

I got waitlisted at another program and I did ask where I stand/how many on the list...no response yet. Have a good spring break everyone!
