Shepherd Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Just curious. I applied, but I haven't heard anything yet. I emailed about two weeks ago and was told they were still in review, and I'd get an email when things were sorted out. R
Shaky Premise Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Yes, I applied to ASU too, but I haven't heard anything from them. I saw that one person was accepted by telephone a while back, but I'm assuming it was either an internal candidate or someone who's been offered a fellowship. Now that Indiana has sent out acceptances (and I didn't get one!), ASU is the last school I'm waiting to hear back from. It shouldn't be much longer now before this whole business is over once and for all.
Benji7523 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I called them a few weeks ago checking whether they got all three of my recommendation letters (had some problems with Oregon) and the secretary told me they'd be informing applicants after March 7th. So hopefully we'll hear this week!

chrissy88 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Thanks for starting this thread! ASU is one of my top choices. I attended a research conference there in October and I got to talk with a lot of the faculty members in the English department. It really seems like a great program. If you have any specific questions about the program or the area and want to ask here or PM me, I can try and be of some help.
breakfast Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I did my undergrad at ASU (not in English though), so if you have any questions about the uni or the area, ask away.

Shepherd Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 Thanks Chrissy and Breakfast. I don't have any specific questions at the moment (I visited last summer and got most of the specifics covered then), but if I think of anything, I'll ask R
Paperclip Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 I've been accepted for rhet & comp (within the English dept)--I presume you are all lit applicants? I'd love to hear decision-relevant insider info if someone has it!

Paperclip Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Nope, I'm on the Rhet/Comp side. When did you get accepted? R I was accepted by email on Feb 19th--I'm sure they have rounds of acceptances, though. They have a big program.

I talked to Dr. Luna (the grad coordinator) by email on the 23rd, and she said they had only send out a couple of notifications at that point and the majority were still undecided. Hopefully the rest of us waiting find out soon. Regardless, congrats on the acceptance, and I hope to see you in the fall R

BTW, they made no mention of funding, so if I get accepted elsewhere with a full package and don't get something from ASU, there will be a spot opening up.

Shepherd Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 Has anyone heard anything new about when decisions would be made? R
Paperclip Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Any application updates yet for those who applied? Anyone with information they'd like to share about the program?
dancingbluestocking Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 (edited) Hi everyone, Congrats to those of you who have been accepted to ASU! I'm a current undergrad in English Lit there (graduating in May and heading off to a PhD program in the fall), and since I've been heavily involved in the department, including teaching in the college, working with the freshmen English majors, and taking graduate seminars, I'd be more than happy to answer questions or otherwise be a resource. It's a big program, so there's a bit of navigation involved, but there are some hands-down AWESOME professors and opportunities there. Part of me is very sad to be leaving. Good luck to you all! Benji7523 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Does Arizona State notify the people on the wait list? I saw some people on the results page post they were on the wait list, but didn't know if they emailed to ask or saw it on their application status. Mine still says "In Review".

Shepherd Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 (edited) I just got the email saying I was accepted Still no mention of funding for me either, but hopefully that will be sorted out soon. (By the way, my status still says "in review," too, so I don't think that means much either way). R Edited March 23, 2010 by Shepherd Cayg118 1
Cayg118 Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I got accepted into the ASU M.A Rhet/Comp program as well. I'm currently torn about it. They didn't offer me any funding, and I live in CT. You all seem to have great things to say about it-- anyone want to shed some light about what living in Arizona's like? What particularly attracted you to the ASU program? One of my concerns is the big cohort. Caitlin

One of my concerns is the big cohort. Caitlin I've heard that due to its size, the program definitely requires self-sufficiency to a greater degree than some smaller programs. I've never been, and would be interested to know these things myself.
Shepherd Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 on the city guide forum will let you know a little more about the city. As for why I chose to apply to the program, it's the openness for one thing (a broad variety of what can be studied and an interdisciplinary option), the uniqueness and variety of classes offered ("Technology of Writing: Video Game Studies" really stood out to me as a good example of this ), and the positive comments I've heard when talking to students and faculty about the program. theboynamedblue Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I heard from the Graduate Coordinator today, and she said that I have been accepted but am on the waitlist for funding. Does anyone know how many students ASU typically funds versus the number of accceptances they make? I know that Nebraska-Lincoln accepts many more students than they have money for, but I don't know about Arizona. I'm just trying to decide if it's in my best interest to wait it out.

I'm in the same boat as you. I know that ASU doesn't fund everyone, but I'm not sure what percentage actually receives funding. Congrats on the acceptance, and I hope we both hear back about the funding soon. R
