medievalmanu Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 As the new application season starts up in a couple months I am dwindling down my schools and would like some advice. I have been looking at schools with scholars who have an interest in Late Antique and Byzantine art (preferably early to mid). Scholars that deal with the Medieval East would also be worth looking into. I have already asked around for scholars in various places but I bet some of you have knowledge on current people in this field since there has been a lot of turnover recently with new faculty members. Does anyone have suggestions or know of some scholars in this area that are not on the verge of retirement? Thank you!
roving99 Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 I think you will likely be best served by filtering through faculty listings at schools you are interested in. Also, find books and articles which you have read and liked, and research whether or not those scholars currently teach and where they do so. The only one I can suggest looking into is Eric Thuno at Rutgers, he's not near retirement yet. (Not my field, so I really don't know many!)
x\/x\/x Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Erik Thunø is a medievalist, not a Byzantinist. The fact that you don't know the major players in your field suggests to me that you are not ready for a PhD program.
kaufdichglücklich Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 There are mid and early career Byzantinists at nearly all of the top Art History grad programs. I don't want this to come off as harsh, but if you are serious about going into a field you should not have to ask who or where the relevant faculty are.

Also, Erik Thunø is a western medievalist, not a Byzantinist...

I know the main people and the field in general...I just wanted to have some other input if I missed anyone.
