mckennahslp Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 Hi all, Needing advice on letters of recommendation. I have two work supervisors that I trust would write really good letters for me and then could get another from either a professor or an SLP I've shadowed. I've heard some people talk about having two from academic people rather than more than one from other areas such as work related or professionals. How did you all go about this? Who were your letters of rec from? In your experience, do schools care much about WHO they are from or the quality of the letter being written about the candidate? Thanks!
CaidanFire Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 (edited) It's most important to submit LOR's from the sources requeted by the individual grad progrms. If not specified, it is always good to try to submit a recommendation from an academic source who can attest to your ability to meet the rigours of a grad program. Lwc23 Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 A lot of schools place emphasis on academic recommendations, because they want to know about your ability to succeed in a rigorous academic environment. I’d lean towards two academic, and then one from work or shadowing (or both, if the school allows four letters). If you really don’t think you can get two positive academic letters then obviously go with whoever will give you positive recommendations, but many programs would strongly prefer most if not all of your letters to be academic. AlwaysaFalcon Posted August 31, 2019 Posted August 31, 2019 I personally had 2 letters from work supervisors and 2 letters from academics (a professor/academic advisor & professor). However, likes others have said make sure you follow the requirements depending on what the school requires. I personally submitted more letters of recommendation because I thought it would make me stand out.

I have 2 academic and 1 supervisor right now, but could ask another supervisor.

I believe with CSDCAS, for example, you could submit four lors and depending on the school and their individual applications, CSDCAS might send them all four or only the first three. If a school gives you the option of submitting more lors, take advantage of that! But I’d keep in mind that schools are getting hundreds of applications and may not look kindly on (or consider) extra unasked-for materials, so I’d only do it for the schools that give you the option.

I was also trying to be the best applicant I could be and it could be helpful if deciding between your application and another applicant. However like @Lwc23 mentioned some schools might only look at the letter required. I'm not sure how it was handled by CSDCAS which letters were sent out but I just did it anyway.

I'm just curious how was the application process applying to that many schools? Also if you wouldn't mind, what were your gre scores? I'm interested in Governors State University and would like some insight if I have a good chance. Thank you
