Hi everyone,

I am trying to get thoughts on selecting an in-person or Skype interview. I just received an invite for a program, and they have both interviews as an option. I have an in-person interview with my top program next week. With how expensive this whole process is, the money situation would be a little tight; however, I don’t want them thinking I’m not a serious applicant. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I would choose in-person unless you really can’t afford it. They won’t judge you negatively for choosing a Skype interview, but other applicants who attend in-person might be advantaged by more face time and more opportunity to show their personality and fit. It’s also helpful for you to see the lab and department before deciding where you’ll spend the next 5+ years of your life.

Thank you! That’s what I was thinking too. The email says I wouldn’t be valued less as an applicant; however, I don’t want to jeopardize that and it would be great to go in-person and make sure it’s a program that fully matches what I’m wanting!
