Committing to a school and then getting accepted off a waitlist?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'm not exactly in this situation yet, but I am stressed beyond belief about where I'm going to get in and go next year.

I was accepted to one school already, but it's reallllllly not my first choice. I have an interview at one of my top choices on Monday. So I was just wondering, what if I get waitlisted at a top choice school? I feel like I'd have to commit to a school that actually accepted me by April 15th, but then what if I get accepted off the waitlist in May or something? How bad would it be to revoke my acceptance? Is that common?? Aside from feeling like a huge jerk and possibly losing a deposit, are there any consequences to doing that?

I'm just so stressed out.

So, I got really lucky I didn't need to put a deposit down anywhere. I got wait listed to several places and into one, so I secured my spot at EWU while waiting on the waitlists. A couple days later I got into WSU (they have a $200 deposit, but it was broken on their website at the time) and removed myself from EWU's list. Then got into UNC and SJSU off the wait lists so I gave up my spot at WSU and then decided between UNC and SJSU. It was a lot of back and forth, but to some extent they expect this which is why there's usually deposits. Not always though I guess!

I'm worried this is going to happen to me too!! I hope that by April 15, I'll have my decision made up, but if I get into a better/more preferable school after that date, I think I'll take the L on the deposit. I think if you don't go where you really want to go, you may regret it later. It's not uncommon for this to happen. There are no consequences to doing this, other than losing your deposit money.

I might actually be in this position now that I got waitlisted to my 2 top schools ?. I'm just worried about committing to a school that begins in the summer and getting off the waitlist in the summer when I'm already starting another program I feel like that's a different story than getting off the waitlist before beginning a program

I committed to one school and then rescinded my acceptance and went with another school after I got off the waitlist. It doesn't matter honestly, and you shouldn't feel guilty (unless you maybe wait until August or something, like... SUPER last minute) because these schools get a bajillion applications and they definitely have other people to offer spots to.
