gigislp Posted August 4, 2020 Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) Hi! Trying to find the right pos-bacc program (in terms of prerequisites fulfilling potential grad schools) and I need a bit of help. So, I'm wondering: 1. What post-bacc programs did you choose and complete? 2. What schools for grad-school where you accepted into? Was it conditional? 3. Did you take any prerequisite (SLP) classes outside of your post-bacc program? Also how did you decipher the prerequisite class names and descriptions? Any tips? Any class titles that you know are equivalent to each other? I've tried e-mailing and calling academic advisors but so far, I haven't received much help. Also I took a physics class on "Life in the Universe" in undergrad because I was told it would work for the ASHA physics requirement but, I'm not sure it will. Any experience with that? What physics class did you guys take? Thank you! Edited August 4, 2020 by gigislp
studygal Posted August 4, 2020 Posted August 4, 2020 Hi! I completed USU's 2nd Bachelor's program and the schools I was accepted/denied to are listed in my signature. I can't recommend USU's program highly enough! It made more sense to me to get a COMD degree rather than try and complete all of the individual requirements for Cal State schools (although I think some schools like CSUSM still want you to have all of their class equivalents completed regardless of whether you have a degree- hopefully I'm not remembering incorrectly), but I recognize not everyone is able to manage that financially. I had a COMD minor from my first degree, however, so I only had to take 10 classes at USU instead of the usual 12. I also have a friend who is a current SLP in a school district who got a significant pay raise for having a Bachelor's degree in COMD so it was worth it for her to do USU's program in the long run, but I'm not sure whether that's an exception. In regards to the ASHA requirements, usually you'll have to check with the individual program to see if your classes qualify if you're unsure. I hope this is helpful! gigislp 1
gigislp Posted August 4, 2020 Author Posted August 4, 2020 Thank you! That was so helpful, I want to apply to San Francisco State and Portland University so that is really good to know! Also congratulations on all your acceptances and your decision studygal 1

That’s interesting. I wonder if not having my BA in COMD will hinder me in the long run. And why the BA was important for her to have.

I would assume not having a COMD BA/BS wouldn't hinder someone too much in the long run since it's becoming more common for programs to accept out-of-fielders (and thus more common for employers to hire folks w/o COMD UG degrees). I'm guessing it also depends on the specific employer's criteria, but it can't hurt to look into it further if you're interested! Wish I had more info to offer.
