Hi all!

Wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for African American lit programs? I'm particularly interested in mid and low tier school.

Thank you!

I dunno what mid to low tier would mean but some schools that seemed strong when I applied were UVA, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, UConn, Brown, Emory, Columbia.  But Af-Am is so broad now that most schools will have at least 2-3 for you to work with. Also, a lot of schools also have Africana or other interdisciplinary PhD program you might want to consider.

Thanks for these recommendations! I hadn't even thought about UConn or Emory. I'm slowly discovering some of interdisciplinary programs, too. Appreciate your reply!

Rutgers and Columbia are probably at the top; Spillers is retiring so Vanderbilt is maybe not as strong; UVA and Berkeley are really strong, and Penn is good but some of their AfAm people are more conservative.
