Hi all! I noticed that there's not a thread yet for the 2023 admissions cycle, so here goes!

I'm applying as an out-of-field, non-traditional student so I'm really nervous about getting into the schools I'm applying to. My undergrad was in applied mathematics and my GPA was not great (3.03). I graduated in 2018, then got an M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction (4.0 GPA) to become a teacher. I'm in my 5th year of teaching; the first 3 years were in high school math (gen ed) and this is my second year in the field of deaf education. I am also pursuing a master's in deaf education (4.0 GPA currently)-- this actually works out great because my current master's is how I'm getting a lot of the prerequisite courses for audiology school (intro to audiology, aural rehabilitation, language development, speech mechanisms, etc.)

I took the GRE in July and scored 157Q, 157V, 4.0 AWA, which actually surprised me since I could've studied a whole lot more lol. Some of the schools I'm applying to are waiving the GRE this year, but I've decided to submit my scores anyways in hopes that it can balance out my undergrad GPA some.

I'm applying to:

  • The University of Texas at Dallas
  • The University of Texas at Austin
  • The University of North Texas
  • Gallaudet University

I've been around audiologists my whole life due to my own hearing loss (I'm bimodal: I use 1 cochlear implant and 1 hearing aid) and am so excited to finally pursue this dream that I've had since childhood of becoming one myself. ...but also so nervous that it's not going to pan out.

I've finished up and submitted all of my applications, including SOPs and LoRs, because I wanted to get them over and done with ? But submitting early(ish) has its downsides... now I have nothing to do but sit around and stress out for the next 4 months ?

Hey, how goes it?

I was hoping someone would start a thread. Didn't want to be the only one in here lol. But, I've had my applications finished since mid September so I feel you on being bored now. And heavy on the stressing out for the next 4 months. I keep checking my application portals like there's gonna be an update anytime soon LOL. Your stats look pretty good though in my opinion and I feel like you would be a good candidate for AuD programs! I'm a Communication Disorders major and my stats aren't stellar by any means. My current overall GPA is 3.11 and my major GPA is 3.06. BUT, earlier this year I was actually diagnosed with ADHD so that definitely explains it... I've went my entire life undiagnosed and struggled in school. Now that I've been properly diagnosed, I am on the right ADHD meds and finally doing much better in my courses. Makes me so much more relieved for grad school.

I opted not to take the GRE as a lot of schools were waiving the requirement, and I'm just not a great standardized test taker overall. So, I probably would've only applied to programs that didn't require it anyways. Outside of my stats; I completed an 8 month SLP internship (initially I wanted to be an SLP but switched over), I was invited to an Audiology Learning Experience earlier this year through Salus University, I shadowed an audiologist for 6 months (about 50 hours of observation), and I joined the National Hearing Conservation Association in March. I also served 4 years active duty in the US Marine Corps. While my military service alone isn't a guarantee to get me admitted into a program, I do think it gives me a slight advantage compared to someone who solely went straight to college out of high school. Schools are always saying they want veteran students (and I think the life experience will make up for my subpar GPA lol). For my extracurriculars, I was in the veterans club at my school, and I worked as an Apple specialist my first semester of undergrad. I am also an immigrant and bilingual. I only applied to three programs because the application process was too damn stressful to apply to anymore and I was not about to chase down professors for letters of recommendations or write a sh*t ton of personal statements.

By all means, I'm not saying any of this to brag but I hope to inspire someone who has a GPA similar to mine not to get discouraged. As long as your GPA is above a 3.0, and have other things on your resume that you've done outside of school like observations, working, playing a sport, etc... you still have a solid chance of being admitted somewhere. Y'all got this!

Have you heard back from UNT? I interviewed with them in October!

Yeah, when I was first looking into applying back in the spring/early summer, my top choice school at the time required the GRE, so I registered for it and took it during the summer when my schedule was a little less hectic. I didn't realize how many programs aren't requiring it anymore! I think only 1 or 2 of the ones I applied to still require it, but I sent in my unofficial scores by choice to all of them because I thought they might help my application. I think it's great how so many places are not requiring it anymore though, it really isn't a great measure of potential success in graduate school.

Yes, I also interviewed with them back in October! I wasn't expecting to hear back from any schools until January at the absolute earliest, so that definitely took me by surprise.

Yeah same! Have you heard an answer back since your interview?

No, I haven't. I did ask them during the interview about the timeline moving forward, and they said that they would hold a recruitment event around February 10th-ish for prospective students to see the campus and clinics, and then soon after that (within a week or two) they will send out decisions.

I didn't get the impression that I would hear anything significantly earlier than that. They just said they like to start getting interviews out of the way for people who have submitted applications earlier instead of doing all of them at once in the new year.

Okay thank you. I also asked but all that was said is that I'd find out soon. That's helpful to know I might not hear until around February!

Hi all!

So happy to see this thread! I am a non-traditional applicant with not the greatest undergrad GPA so I'm a little nervous! I am planning on applying to UNT, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Wichita State. I might also apply to Memphis and Lamar.

@clborg would you mind sharing your experience with the UNT interview? What kinds of questions were asked and was it via zoom? I'm barely submitting applications and I saw that UNT gave out at least one admissions offer back in October.

So glad to see this thread! I'm graduating from UGA this spring and applied to Auburn, Florida, ETSU, Indiana, & Buffalo. Just got an email for an interview invite at Auburn. My GRE is 314 and GPA 3.92. Really hoping to hear back from other programs as well! I can't wait to see how things end up! Previous year's AuD threads really helped me through this past year with applying and seeing where people are going, so I'm hoping this thread does the same for us and for future applicants!

Hey audio friends!

I have applied to 5 schools (all out of my state).

  1. Vanderbilt University
  2. Washington University (St. Louis)
  3. James Madison University (JMU)
  4. East Tennessee State University (ETSU)
  5. East Carolina University (ECU)

I have heard from ETSU about an interview scheduling for next week. The rest are pending any kind of interview or admittance. I am confident, however I am nervous because I did not quite meet the GRE standards for one of my schools, but I hope the rest of my application is strong enough. Rooting for y'all!

Hi All!

So glad I found this thread!

I'm graduating from EMU in April this year. I'm a double major in CSD and WGST with a GPA of 3.91. I didn't take the GRE so I don't have any scores to add for that.

I've applied to 7 schools:

  1. University of Colorado-Boulder
  2. Syracuse University
  3. Pacific University
  4. University of Wisconsin-Madison
  5. The Ohio State University
  6. University of the Pacific
  7. Grand Valley State University

I've heard back from Pacific University, University of the Pacific, and Grand Valley State University for interviews. All within the next month, first one this Friday.

I'm so nervous that I've not hearing back from a few but I know at least one of the programs doesn't do interviews (CU Boulder) so hopefully it doesn't mean much that I haven't heard back yet. I keep checking the application portals like they're going to update this soon, knowing most won't until March.

Good Luck to everyone!!!!!

Hey everyone! I really enjoyed reading last years thread and found it very helpful so I thought I would share too! I'm graduating with a CSD major and a Spanish minor from my schools honors college. My overall GPA is a 3.70 and I have 100+ observation hours and 300+ volunteer hours. I applied to the following:

Wayne State University (scheduled interview), Northwestern University, University of Florida, University of Tennessee, Wash U- St. Louis (scheduled interview), Grand Valley State University (scheduled interview), Purdue University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Iowa, Nova Southeastern University (scheduled interview), University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, Indiana University and University of Minnesota!!

I know I applied to a lot of programs but I was the only person in my cohort pursuing Audiology which made me pretty nervous! I'd rather apply to a lot than not enough.

Good luck to everyone!!

I just interviewed for ETSU yesterday! Have you had yours yet/how did it go?! They're super nice and I really enjoyed talking to them.

I interviewed on Tuesday, it went great! I agree, they were super nice and tailored to my interests. Glad they were my first interview, my nerves have calmed immensely, haha.

Sorry I’m just now responding! I was having some issues logging in here.

Yes, the interview was over Zoom with a faculty member and a current student. I honestly can’t remember the questions they asked since it was so long ago. I got an email from the department on 01/19/23 (last week) inviting me to an on-campus recruitment event for their top 30 candidates in a few weeks. I was shocked and honored to hear that I was a part of that category! From my understanding of previous years processes, UNT typically sends out decisions in the week or two following this event. I don’t think anyone has been offered admissions at this point, so I’m not sure where you’re seeing an admissions offer from October.

No worries at all! Thanks so much for your reply, i really appreciate it. I searched “UNT audiology” on linkedin and it looks like someone had posted their acceptance dated 10/31/22.

also, huge congrats to you!! That is so exciting! Wishing you all the best with every school you applied to!!

I saw someone post that they had interviewed for Vanderbilt in late January this year and got accepted last week.  I thought Vanderbilt didn't do interviews?  Has their admissions process changed?

I also saw that and was confused... I applied and have not heard anything yet. My application status still says "submitted."
