Well that happened fast enough. Rejection from UW. Done waiting, my only acceptance this cycle is from CU Boulder. I do want to accept, but I will take a bit more time to make my decision. Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting for decisions!

@welcometouniqlo I am also waiting for U of T, though I kinda already gave up because they admit very few international students and the stipend barely covers the living costs. I guess you might want to write to them to see if the admissions have been completed.

Both universities are highly regarded in China studies, and have been for a long time. I would recommend taking a look at their faculty or course offerings to get a feel for which suits your interests better. Good luck!

Anyone has news on Columbia's EALC MA programme yet? Feels pretty late so far...

Rejected by Columbia! This closes the application cycle for me.

My area of focus is modern Chinese literature (particularly, Republican-era literature and culture), even though my profile looks a lot more comparative and interdisciplinary than that. I came from a comp lit background, and I reoriented myself around EALC during my master's study. Out of the 7 EAS Ph.D. programs that I have applied for and heard from, I was rejected by 6 (UCB, UChicago, Harvard, UCLA, Columbia) and waitlisted by 1 (UC Irvine). I interviewed separately with two professors at UCLA in early January and my POI at UC Irvine in early February. I was also invited to an informal chat with my POI at Berkeley in early January. 

I was, however, admitted to Penn State's Comparative Literature program with the prospect of doing a dual-title in Asian Studies. (The only potential concern for me is the relative shortage of faculty working on premodern and early modern Chinese literature at Penn State, but I can always bring someone from outside to my committee.) I will very likely commit.  

I wish everyone all the best of luck in everything! Remember that academic life is not everything, and it is by no means the only option. Also, the admission process is like a black box. A lot of factors went into who gets admitted and who not, and oftentimes it is more a matter of distribution than competence, as there are so many well-qualified applicants out there. Don't lose heart if the results are discouraging, but do make sure that a humanities Ph.D. is what you want before forging ahead into one, as it is a lot of commitment (and potentially sunken costs.)

After that decision comes, containing the somber platitude I know it will, I shall show myself out, and bid you all a fulfilling and joyous end to the cycle, imparting as I depart some lines of prose! Until then, I remain, weathered and disgruntled but glad nonetheless to have had all of your company throughout these agonizing and exciting months.

I am still waiting on UT-Austin and UC Irvine. I contacted their respective East Asian Studies departments to inquire about my application but they never responded...

Hello guys! Here I want to ask a question. It is hard for me to choose between UCLA EAS MA and Columbia EALAC MA. My research interests are material culture and its relationship with modern Chinese literature, and postcolonism. Any suggestions? Thank you very much!

I can't speak for UCLA, but Columbia is strong in this regard. The department has strengths in premodern, Qing, and late-Qing through Republican era in particular. In my experience, there is somewhat less of a focus on the post-1949 era. And Columbia is a great place to learn about and do research on postcolonial studies; after all, Edward Said taught at Columbia for forty years, and Gayatri Spivak is currently at Columbia, as well. As an EALAC MA student you are required to obtain permission to take courses in other departments, however. I can't speak to that process from lack of experience. There are, fortunately, plenty of courses available to EALAC MA students that are cross-listed with History and perhaps other departments; and there are faculty - affiliated with the department and who teach courses in EALAC - from other disciplines, including sociology. Yes, I think maybe they release outcomes in batches (?). I saw someone said that they still consider application after the priority application ddl on a rolling base, so I guess some applications before that ddl are still under review and the department just cannot make decisions immediately. Go to Columbia, it will be way easier to get into a PhD from there, and also Dorothy Ko is brilliant with material culture, among other faculty.
