Hey, would anyone like to check out my Sop and review it for me? Its pretty much complete, but I recently decided to completely change the 1st 2 paragraphs. So, please help me out. Also, could you please tell me whether its advisable to name a professor from the university? Cos, it might turn out that some other prof is reading the Sop, and might be offended or something.

I'll look at it.

Definitely include names of professors you are interested in working with and why you think they would be a good fit. Why would someone be offended that you are a better fit with someone else?

Think of your application like you are applying to a research group, not applying to a university. A good fit is what will get you into a department, so you want to make this fit as clear as possible in your SOP.

I am still confused on this topic about mentioning names in the SOP. Usually when i am looking at Profs, yes there is this one guy that i would really like to work and then there are few other than i can do research with. So if i mention one name i am essentially limiting my self to that single guy and if i mention 3 or 4 different names then it calls into question who i really want to work with. So i was thinking it might be better to keep one's SOP somewhat generic and than individually contact profs.

Any Thoughts.........

To the original post. If you still need feedback, i'd be happy to take a look.

You are more likely to be wanted by any of those other profs, but you aren't going to be as highly desired by the one guy. It's a bit of a gamble, but it makes sense in a lot of cases.
