MegMill Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Two days ago, I got an email from Chicago which stated, in part, "Your application has now been forwarded to the admissions review committee in the Department of History. We will continue to receive materials for you, and after they are processed, they will be sent to the department to be matched to your application." Anyone know if Chicago has a rolling admissions policy? If so, once the Dep't gets your shiz, how long does it take from then?

My transcript came in late (well actually I sent them a copy in Oct and apparently was lost). Hopefully mine will be forwarded in a few days. I don't think U of C has a rolling policy and being forward doesn't meaning it's being reviewed. Usually you should expect an offer in early Feb. But yes indeed it seems everybody's fast moving this year Berkeley History will start reviewing next week (Heard from my friend) Berkeley Polisci has already started last week/early this week and Stanford Polisci should be starting reviewing now

MoJingly Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Wonder why things are "faster" this go-round? If this is true, could it have anything to do with the economy and difficulty funding? Perhaps the "let's-get-these-applications-reviewed-so-we-can-focus-on-money" thought process?
MegMill Posted December 10, 2010 Author Posted December 10, 2010 That's exciting! Are you nervous? Yes, and no. I'm nervous but not as much as I thought I would be. I guess because in the back of my mind, I keep telling myself that my app was pushed through so quickly by virtue of its pure shittiness.
MegMill Posted December 10, 2010 Author Posted December 10, 2010 If this is true, could it have anything to do with the economy and difficulty funding? Perhaps the "let's-get-these-applications-reviewed-so-we-can-focus-on-money" thought process? I think this is the most plausible reason. Since I'm new to this whole process, are you accepted and then notified on funding or are you notified of each at the same time?
Ludwig von Dracula Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 I think this is the most plausible reason. Since I'm new to this whole process, are you accepted and then notified on funding or are you notified of each at the same time? In my experience, and possibly generally, you are admitted first and offered some kind of funding later. Can lead to nail-biting moments as the middle of April approaches and you're trying to decide between different offers.
RDX Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 (edited) Wonder why things are "faster" this go-round? I don't know. AFAIK, the university system runs slow. You don't know the department funding until the last minute, say, by the end of December or maybe even later (well, of course, my knowledge comes from a small sample). So I don't see the point of reviewing early if they aren't even sure about their funding hmm anyway, my materials for U of C are received now. We will see how things end up (Oh by the way, gimme an offer!). Edited December 11, 2010 by RDX

They wanna be kind to us and break our hearts sooner rather than later. I mean, as we all know, prolonging heart break only makes it worse...
RDX Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 So RDX, if you don't think it's the funding issue, what do you think it is? They wanna be kind to us and break our hearts sooner rather than later. I mean, as we all know, prolonging heart break only makes it worse... I'm not even sure if they ARE moving fast. After all we have only a very limited number of cases. But if they do, which I believe might be the case, I'm wondering too. I incline to believe it's probably due to the influx of materials. Say U of Washington once told me their small office was flooded, by applications. This year's job market was not much better than last year, or as far as I heard from my friends. Many people who failed to locate any offers last year and this year are joining this combined army of applications. This is just a very weak hypothesis tho.

MegMill Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 It's been a while since all of my materials were in but i didn't get any such emails. When did you submit your application? I dont remember if the deadline was the 1st or the 15th. If it was the 1st, I probably submitted it on the 28th or 29th of November. If the deadline was the 15th, then probably around the first of December.
balderdash Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 My own experience: Poli Sci was the 10th, and my final rec didn't come in until the 10th. I just got the email today saying that it had been forwarded to the department.
