Thanks for the info. Do you mind telling me what your field is?

Vandy is a bit of a reach for me but I have some connections there so I thought I would toss an app out and see what happens. I figure if I can at least get on the waitlist I may have a decent chance. Seems like most of the people Vandy accepts are people that apply there as a safety and end up going elsewhere. Crossing my fingers for a miracle!

American--in the institutions camp. I sort of agree with you about the safety thing, but I have to tell you--they've really won me over. Their package is very generous and 4 profs emailed me this weekend--really aggressive, but I guess it's a good thing? Dare I say they're at the top of my list right now.

In any case, keep your head up. They still haven't finalized offers, so hopefully you'll hear good news in the next few weeks. Best of luck!

I thought about Vandy and WashU as slight reach schools, but money is a bit tight and so I stuck to schools that I felt I'd have a pretty reasonable chance at. Vandy and WashU both have terrific departments, and both--especially WashU--are good at faculty placements.

I just discovered Peterson's (from that crazy thread in another subforum) and looked up various schools. Does anyone know how accurate this site is? Specifically, I looked up NYU, and it said this: 633 applicants, 42% accepted, 97 enrolled. Link

That can't be right, can it?

This is the first I've come across Peterson's. If it's true, it includes master's students.

For the record, cross-referencing with Duke and UCSD's offical statistics suggests the numbers might be a bit off. UCSD's numbers match for 2004, but Duke's seem off for every year, although their closest seems to be 2003.

EDIT: I also found at least one instance where the numbers on the website suggested 45 people were accepted, and 47 people enrolled.

All the schools in Peterson have around a 10% acceptance rate. From Brown and UPenn up to Yale and Harvard, there are no more than a couple points of variation in the acceptance rate. Apparently, self-selection is acting as the first cut. That's really surprising. If you look at the top 50 undergrads, there is a huge spread in acceptance rates. But that doesn't hold true for poli sci departments.

Is it safe to say that if I haven't heard from UCLA or Santa Cruz yet, I'm not in, since acceptances have gone out? I haven't heard anything from anywhere yet.

I was contacted by the department to tell me that I'd been accepted at UCSC ... but they also said that official notification won't be out for a few more weeks yet. Hold on!

Fuck fuck fuck.

The Berkeley rejection is gonna hurt.

No need to get despondent yet. Only a few acceptances have been posted so far, and it looks as though in previous years (two years ago, for example) acceptances went out over two days. Given that the acceptances to Berkeley seemed to be posted at around 5 pm PST (the latest time I would expect anyone to be sending out admissions offers at Berkeley), I think there's some evidence to suggest that they may not be done.
