Rose Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Yeah sorry, that wasn't based on any hard info, just guessing they may not have finished if still making calls today. Was it someone who was mentioned in your SOP? I'm hesitant to hold out hope given how this round is going for me, but on the other hand I'm also telling myself that maybe the person I mentioned as my first POI is just out of town this weekend and therefore not making calls...
explodingstressball Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Long time lurker here claiming the latest MIT acceptance... they tried to call but my number has changed - followed up by email about an hour ago. Stats if interested: 740Q/730V/5A, Ugrad from little known South African uni, currently doing Masters at major UK uni, no pubs. Good luck to all... Which SA university? Congrats!

Mine was not from someone mentioned in my SoP, but was from a Prof in my general field (polecon).
danRSA Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Which SA university? Congrats! The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Gem of an institution.
explodingstressball Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Gem of an institution. Good ol' Maritzburg. Cool!
danRSA Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Good ol' Maritzburg. Cool! I was at the Durban campus, but Maritzburg is a fine place. You've been to SA, or are you a fellow Saffer? Glad to see you got an admission, I recall you stressing (lol) a lot on the boards a few days ago.... such a relief when it happens...

So do a couple people on this board.
CreanhouseEffect Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 in at notre dame! email came around 8:45 this morning...huh?! well at least it's a nice way to start a sunday. Congrats, morningglory! Isn't this your second oddly timed acceptance? If I were you, I'd brace myself for more good news at about 2:48am EST on Ash Wednesday. Because why not?

If I were you, I'd brace myself for more good news at about 2:48am EST on Ash Wednesday. Because why not? Maybe ND does all their acceptances on Sunday? I mean, it is a Holy Day! Any other Catholic universities? Maybe Georgetown will do admissions on Ash Wednesday!
explodingstressball Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Maybe Georgetown will do admissions on Ash Wednesday! I second that!
redcoat Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Mind sharing your stats?? I'm waiting to hear from MIT too. The website said they'll send out acceptances via DHL and rejections via USPS. I wonder why the phone calls? Just doing both? I'm British - I have undergrad and masters degrees in economics from good British unis (not oxford or the LSE though!). I'm not completely sure how to convert, but I guess my GPA would be something around 3.8 or 3.9. GREs were 780Q and 720V. Also a couple of year's work experience in a research-oriented role. They said on the phone that it was the 'fit' that got me in - I want to do work in comparative political econ, so I think my economics background helped Was it someone who was mentioned in your SOP? I'm hesitant to hold out hope given how this round is going for me, but on the other hand I'm also telling myself that maybe the person I mentioned as my first POI is just out of town this weekend and therefore not making calls... yes, it was one of the names I mentioned in the SoP
explodingstressball Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I'm British And suddenly the rationale behind your user name become clear
bandersnatch Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Claiming another MIT admission in the political economy sub-field!
camcgee97 Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Maybe ND does all their acceptances on Sunday? I mean, it is a Holy Day! Any other Catholic universities? Maybe Georgetown will do admissions on Ash Wednesday! Ha... Shouldn't they be resting today?
adbogolubov Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 (edited) Claiming another MIT admission in the political economy sub-field! Did you also receive a call? Or email? Edited February 20, 2011 by adbogolubov
bandersnatch Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Did you also receive a call? Or email? I received a call which I initially missed....and then nearly had a heart attack after seeing the area code.
Ashlett Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I received a call which I initially missed....and then nearly had a heart attack after seeing the area code. Are you an international student too? I was thinking maybe they were just doing international students today?
bandersnatch Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Are you an international student too? I was thinking maybe they were just doing international students today? Nope, I'm a domestic applicant. Good luck to everyone else! I had pretty much given up hope after all of the results on Friday.
Ashlett Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 hahaha as an ND alum, this is cracking me up! but i'd have to say that catholic universities should be releasing acceptances on Fat Tuesday, so applicants can get some celebration in before Ash Wednesday (i.e. day of fasting, etc, etc)! Too true!!! But maybe it's a test of faith?? hahaha
firefly28 Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 As an Indianist (although my interests geographically are broader so I like 'South Asianist' more) who's not interested in Indian political economy (primarily) I hope i'll join the ranks of Indianist faculty someday. Ashutosh Varshney is a prominent Indianist at Brown. So is Devesh Kapur and Francine Frankel at UPenn. There's Echeverri-Gent at UVA and Sinha at Wisconsin. There are other Indianists around but not as hotly discussed in online forums at UCSB, Illinois, WashU St. Louis, UT-Austin, Cornell, UMass Amherst etc. etc. Also, as noted above, I expect a higher demand for China specialists and South Asianists in the near future. Good for the likes of me I guess. Thanks for the response and good luck, I'll look forward to reading your work. I hope to branch off into India at some point in my career, though I'm less interested in a given region (hence why I'm not applying to be a comparativist anywhere) than I am in certain countries across the globe. India is ripe for an incredible amount of work due to the complexity of the nation (and the fact that it's actually a functioning democracy, unlike, say, Congo DRC).
firefly28 Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Yeah, I don't think the problem is too few Africanists. For me, it's that they're all working on political economy rather than statehood (save Reno), legitimacy, et cetera. It's odd, because it's a huge topic in the UK/France. There are some people in the US who do it - Dunn and Herbst - but they're at schools that don't offer doctorates. In Herbst's case, he's even left to be the president of Colgate. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I agree with humanprovince. There are tons of Africanists, but finding overlapping specialties is difficult. Yes, no disrespect to folks who work in political economy--it's a great field, it's just not remotely what I'm interested in. The number of Indianists, or Africanists (particularly with respect to East and Central Africa) who do work in public opinion, campaigns, etc. seems to be rather lackluster :\

If I were you, I'd brace myself for more good news at about 2:48am EST on Ash Wednesday. Because why not? thank you thank you! yes it is actually. maybe this means a watched pot never boils, i.e. i need to keep myself away from the computer and away from constantly checking the results page and boards and i'll hear back from the rest of my schools? (ha.)
