sputnik Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I just saw on the results board that on over a week ago someone else got an email invite to the interview weekend at my top choice school. I have yet to hear from them. Now, I have this overwhelming sense of doom.....What does it mean?! Argh! The results board might just be a form of torture. I haven't decided yet.
Bison_PhD Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 This is my second application season, and I different types of programs do the interview process in different ways. That said, I know that in most of the programs that I've applied to, they do a few rounds of interviews. The first round of applicants are the creme de la creme, but people will get accepted from the second of third rounds too. This helps me some when I see others post from schools I've applied to. While knowing that you are not your schools top choice may hurt, it doesn't mean that you have no chance. Good Luck.
newms Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I agree with Bison. You really do not know if there will be other rounds of invites after the interviews so there is still hope yet. Perhaps you can check the survey results from last year to see if admits to your dream program were given out later in the season. Also, why the feeling of doom? Ultimately it is not the school that you go to that is going to determine your level of future success, sure it might be better at a top school, but it is still very possible to work your way to the top of your field even if you don't go to an elite university.
sputnik Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 Thank you both for the replies and the perspective. I really appreciate it. This is my first time around the application block, so I have no idea what's happening. LOL The feeling of doom...it really comes because I have only 2 schools that I can really attend. One is the top choice, which is the top choice not just because of prestige but also because of funding. The other school, I already know their funding package and it is not enough. So, if I don't get into my top choice, then I am going to have some very difficult decisions ahead of me. Hence, the feeling of doom.
newms Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Take it from me as a someone on the second go around, there is life if you don't get in on your first attempt - I look at my second go around as getting a second opportunity, this time with a lot more experience. All is not lost for this year though, there is still a long way to go this year and you may still get admitted to your first choice school. All the best! sputnik and NadaJ 2
