Hey everyone. The list of winners has been posted and only 477 awards were awarded. 130 awards for the postdocs. These numbers are very low compared to previous years. Anyone know why this happened? What about budget 2024?

I see the results posted here: https://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/results-resultats/recipients-recipiendaires/2023/doctoral_fellowships-bourses_de_doctorat-eng.aspx

At the top of the page, it says "This list reflects the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships offered in winter/spring 2024. This is a point-in-time list and may not reflect the actual total amount of funded recipients, with awards accepted or declined as late as January 2025. SSHRC does not post updates to these lists; however, you can find information about award recipients through the Open Government website."

Previous lists do not have such a disclaimer, and in past years they have been posted in March, presumably after the January acceptances came through. For whatever reason, it seems they have announced the recipients earlier this year, and as such it is not a complete list.

I highly doubt they will award more awards above the decided caps of 477 and 130.. I understood that disclaimer to mean that this is the list of original winners, some names might have changed.. but the caps are fixed. There might be 1 or 2 declines in the postdocs still because people couldnt defend on time.

These numbers are the lowest ever. It is like they raised the amount of the awards at the expense of award numbers.

Lowest ever? Lower than last year I think but I checked the 2020 and 2018 and I think there are certainly more awards now?

2022: 630 phds and 150 postdocs

2021: 657 phds and 182 postdocs

2020: 530 phds and 160 postdocs

2019: 540 phds and 160 postdocs.

Couldnt find the page for 2018 phds, but in 2018 there were 151 postdocs.

I am just wondering if next year it is going to be the same.

Can you let me know where you got the figures from? Just want to make sure we are looking at the same thing!

Well strangely I'm not on the list and I have already received one instalment...so the list is clearly incomplete haha

Oh really? Why do you think that is? Did you win the SSHRC award at the same time as all the others?

I'm assuming that all this updating regarding award amounts is making it difficult (people had to respond within a certain amount of days, they're updating all the Notice of Awards, etc). The award amounts on this list are also not updated to the current ones. As they note, all awards are on the open government portal (I'm on that one). So I think the lists are very provisional and instead of updating them, they just refer to the government platform instead.

Did you first win the super-sshrc by any chance? That might be why you are not on this list. This list is the original regular sshrc winners.

Ah yes I was awarded the CGS-D, but then converted to the SSHRC doctoral one as I'm at a foreign institution.

Has anyone heard from SSHRC when the increase payments will actually happen? They confirmed that we will get the increase (I received the letter, etc.), but they have so far only said I will receive the original award payment in November and nothing about when the increased amount will be, aside from "soon". Would be nice to know for budgeting purposes.

Howdy all!

Putting some final touches on my application now that we're all waiting around for the system to start working again. Figured I'd start this thread early and see who else is in the same situation!

😢 ME! how are you so calm? I am losing it rn. keep refreshing the page like the website is magically going to come back up.

Got rejected for FRQ this morning as well! Does anyone know if there is a waitlist for FRQ? As in, if people decline the award, it might go to the next in line? My friend who rejected FRQ last year said that there is, but I can't find any information online.

hey! did you ever find out any information on this? i am applying to FRQ master's this year and have been very curious... thanks!

I'm applying directly to SSHRC this year (currently applying for PhD in architecture programs) and am very confused about the Committee selection...in other parts of the application it seems as though they classify architecture as a fine art, however I'm just not sure about selecting Fine Arts/Literature as my committee, especially since it's a project about the history of governments, housing, etc... any advice? It seems like a huge decision and they don't give much to go on!

Here are the committees: https://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/apply-demande/background-renseignements/postdoctoral_committees-comites_postdoctoral-eng.aspx

Those are the postdoc committees. These are the doctoral ones: https://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/apply-demande/background-renseignements/doctoral_committees-comites_doctorat-eng.aspx

They are more or less the same, question still stands...

Your project is either committee 1 or committee 2.. alot of people are in this situation, between two or more disciplines. I guess you have to choose if your project is more architecture (fine arts) or history.
