I just came here to wonder about that, because checking Draft notifications from last year I just noticed that ALL the Interview requests people posted were for Fiction and Nonfiction and there were no Interview Requests listed for Poetry - simply acceptances and rejections for all three genres at the end of February. I'm trying to figure out if I should be freaking out for not having got a request because i applied for poetry but maybe they don't even interview the poets????

bumping this in case it got missed to see if anyone might have any insights ? this is re U Pittsburgh notifications

Only data I have to offer is that in 2018 a poet got accepted Feb 1st via phone.

No idea what is on there, but I imagine if poetry doesn’t conduct interviews, you might be hearing soon if you are accepted. But maybe they conduct interviews and no poets for years have recorded that on draft. You should know either way by end of Feb based on previous years, so fingers crossed you get accepted/interviewed! 🤞

Don’t know if they interview poets, but I do know that some interview requests go out on different days, theres often a range.

Also a UPitt poetry applicant and I'm bored and spending time parsing data sounds great to me.

I find it unlikely that they don't interview poets. Amherst does interviews and they interview all genres. Though I understand there are more fiction applicants than poetry, Pitt also interviews nonfiction applicants (of which there are far fewer than fiction as well). Plus, putting together a good cohort is one of the purposes of the interview, so that would give more reason to interview all genres.

Last year's spreadsheet shows zero UPitt poetry interviews, but it also shows zero poetry acceptances or waitlists. Generally, an interview means you're getting accepted or waitlisted. So having no poetry interviews on the 2024 data seems unlikely to mean there are no poetry interviews at all--much more likely to mean poetry interviews/acceptances/waitlist people were just not on Draft last year.

I think the "it seems unlikely no one was on Draft" idea is (understandable!) copium. However, I also think people overestimate how much coherence these adcoms processes have--professor assigned to make the calls gets busy, different genres assigned to different professors, other stuff comes up and calls/emails get delayed, etc etc, etc. Example, last year UPitt interviews: fiction 1/30, fiction 2/6, nonfiction 2/12.

So, this year, all we know is three fiction interviews were posted on 1/29. I don't think that rules out more fiction interviews coming next week. It certainly doesn't rule out poetry interviews coming next week either. For me, I'm calling Pitt an unofficial rejection if I don't get an interview request next week though, because beyond that seems very unlikely based on Draft data. Okay thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Yes, these self-reported data are very, very incomplete. Example: I don't even have a Facebook account, and will not create one, so will not report on Draft. Another example: Duotrope. They go so far as to remind users that a "zero percent acceptance rate" for a publication simply means that no users have reported data, not that the publication accepts zero submissions.

Looking for data where there aren't any is an invitation to suffering, rather than answers or peace.

Hi y'all - got my first bit of news yesterday, and it was an acceptance at one of my top choices (UNR)! Good luck to everyone else going through it right now - I wasn't all that anxious before yesterday because I assumed that news would not come until March (did not know about this place before today), but being caught by surprise has shown me the true meaning of anxiety. Y'all live like this???

hello again - as someone on the clueless end, what is the Draft? 😭 I'm waiting on 4 MFAs - my first time applying and I can't help but feel I should have applied to more, and I have no clue when to expect notifications except for those that say say on the websites so suffice to say that I'm going insane!!!!

Hi. Draft is an unofficial but popular Facebook group for MFA applicants where current and former applicants (including enrolled/former students) meet, share info, and answer questions. A new one is made ahead of each admission year. The one for this season is called "MFA Draft '25". If you're on Facebook, you can find it by doing a simple search. There are over 1000 members there. It's by no means a must have, but it's a rich resource for research, preparation, updates, and general comradeship in the MFA app journey.

What four schools did you apply to, and what's your genre?

uc davis is my top choice for fiction! also same re: job apps. i'm applying for work simultaneously. not sure what i'll do if i both land a job offer and get into school, but i don't want to prematurely limit myself. i don't think you should either! if you have to leave a position for grad school, so be it. after being impacted by two layoffs in two years, my attitude is that you should always put yourself first rather than worry about inconveniencing a company.

definitely agree! the job market is so horrible right now, which was honestly a big draw for me to make the leap and apply this past year. I would definitely choose grad school even over the highest-paying job because I don't really want to stay in the professional sector I'm in anyway, but it would be tough.

Best of luck with Davis! It's one of my tops too, I was conflicted about applying because I'm from there (not because it's not a great school and cool town but because I don't love the idea of running into people I went to middle school with) but their faculty list is one of my faves of all the places I applied to. It also def seems a bit more realistic acceptance rate-wise.

Anyone know what schools we can expect we’ll hear from this coming week?

Based on the data of years prior, I'd say it's possible we'll hear from Northwestern (a poetry acceptance was actually recorded today in this year's spreadsheet), University of Oregon (acceptances/waitlists), and Indiana University Bloomington (poetry, probably). This week last year there was also some Johns Hopkins commotion, but who really knows if they'll be consistent with last year. I'd say Oregon State acceptances are possible too, considering that one was recorded on February 6th last year. Boise St and Boston University also notified acceptances/waitlists this week last year.

But who really knows! UIUC was about two weeks late notifying fiction acceptances/waitlists this year compared to previous years. So everything above may be entirely unhelpful.

But here's to hoping we'll all receive some good news this week!

Since we have talked each week about who is gonna notify.

What week do you actually think people will receive the most news?

I'm thinking maybe not next week but the week after but that is a total guess.

I agree with you that the third week of Feb is probably going to have the most movement. I hope things start ramping up though!

idk after my official rejection and my other anticipated ones I've been a little thankful for the reprieve from bad news.
