Also hoping they are consistent with their scoring.. Are there any sources to confirm that more awards will be offered this year? I know that the value of the SSHRC postdoc has increased but am curious if overall increase in awards has been reported.

"In addition to the increase in award values, Budget 2024 proposed to increase the number of scholarships and fellowships provided, building to approximately 1,720 more graduate students and fellows benefitting each year, and to streamline the various tri-agency scholarship and fellowship programs into one talent program." https://www.canada.ca/en/innovation-science-economic-development/news/2024/05/government-of-canada-announces-details-of-increase-in-award-values-for-federal-scholarships-and-fellowships.html I dont think they awarded more awards to the nserc postdoc applicants from what I saw.. they might maintain the regular success rate of around 20%. Who knows. Edited February 20 by jiko1 oliverbedard 1

Offers of alternate awards are made from july to september (they do not specify the exact date or month) My guess is that some people will decline. Some people may not want to move or get other offers. Edited February 20 by qeta
Adelaide9216 Posted February 22 Posted February 22 (edited) Is it normal that my application dissapeared from the portal where I have applied? Is it the same for you guys? (webapps.nserc)? I also applied for tenure-track faculty jobs, so I am wondering what to do if ever I get a postdoc grant AND a TT faculty job. Pros and cons for each option? Edited February 22 by Adelaide9216

You cant take a tt job while being a sshrc postdoc. The postdoc is considered a full time job so its against their policies. But if you do get a tt job you should def take it over the sshrc; since it is so difficult to get a tt job these days. The postdoc is only for 2 years whereas the tt job is permanent. Pros and cons for each option? In that happy scenario, try to negotiate with the department offering the job to allow you to hold the postdoc first and then begin immediately afterward. This is rare but not unheard of. But ultimately, of course, take the permanent job over the postdoc. Edited February 23 by oliverbedard jiko1 1

What's the advantage to negoticate a postdoc and then after taking a tt instead of just taking the tt position?

Not having to teach as much or at all for two years so you can focus on research; more opportunities to network in another department; a line on your CV. Adelaide9216 1

You will have unrestricted time to do the things that take a lot of time like getting pubs out and applying for grants. You can use the time to get a head-start on your tenure file. Some incoming faculty in my elite US department used this strategy so that they could take mat leave a year or two into the tt job and not feel like they were going to fall behind because they wanted to start a family. (This is horrendous, I know.) Adelaide9216 1
torysira Posted February 24 Posted February 24 No news yet but just wanted to commiserate with everyone. I am finding it hard to focus. Knowing SSHRC they will probably not post results until the last day of the month 🙄 weinercat 1
qeta Posted February 25 Posted February 25 I’m so glad we’ll find out on a Friday. It’s gonna be a lost weekend no matter what the outcome, hahaha! torysira 1

Acapulco202 Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Saw someone else post about their application being deleted. Glad to know that's normal! Are the results announced on the same portal (webapps.nserc)? Or is there some other portal to check for them? SSHRC's website says "SSHRC makes competition results available to applicants via the SSHRC Extranet for Applicants." but it's not clear to me what this means...

The extranet is completely separate from the application portal. You will get an email from SSHRC that will link to the extranet and give your user name. You will have to click on the link to reset your password in order to log in and view the decision letter. Edited February 25 by qeta Adelaide9216 1

Adelaide9216 Posted Wednesday at 10:43 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:43 PM I just got an email! I'm so scared
Adelaide9216 Posted Wednesday at 10:57 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:57 PM I got an offer!! torysira and qeta 1 1
qeta Posted Wednesday at 11:06 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:06 PM Congrats on those who got an offer! I got denied and was especially dinged on the feasibility score. I would love to know the scores of the winners. The PDF award notice gives significantly less information than the CGS-D, so I have no idea what rank I am and how rankings correspond to scores.
Adelaide9216 Posted Wednesday at 11:11 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:11 PM Hello, I am so sorry you did not get an offer, maybe try again next year! I tried for Banting and did not even pass the institutional selection process. In my committee, for SSHRC, only 21% of the candidates got funding, and it is the same for the entire contest (828 applications, only 174 got funding). qeta 1

Depending on what else happens this year, I probably will try again. I really like my life in London, so I’m not super-sad to not move to Toronto without my partner and dogs.
