user3141 Posted March 11 Posted March 11 I just noticed that the 2025 NDSEG Conference is cancelled. Not to speculate too much, but does this indicate a decrease in funding to the program? Has anyone heard from a current Fellow what the rationale for the cancellation is?
walrus416 Posted March 11 Posted March 11 several other conferences from various agencies and departments have been canceled as well. I don't think this is necessarily tied to a funding issue but more to do with multiple EOs regarding stopping work on, let's say, "banned" topics. While NIH and NSF bear the brunt of these, the NDSEG falls under several umbrellas that the EOs cover. They don't differentiate by agency as far as I believe so they blanketly apply to everything under the Executive. Likely, DoD received a stop work order related to one of the EOs about the conference. user3141 1
nems Posted March 12 Posted March 12 the official email received by the current fellows cited the EO on restricting government-wide unnecessary travel as the main reason for the conference's cancellation. this tracks, since a lot of NIH conferences started being canceled even before their department-specific funding cuts were announced user3141, aljal_astro and 3ColumnsInATrenchCoat 3

pandayoexpress Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Even though it’s a different agency completely, NSF did announce that they expect to announce winners on time this year https://www.nsfgrfp.org I wonder what that means for DOD

Unsure if affects NDSEG, but something to speculate.
guavalava Posted March 18 Posted March 18 The first March update was on time this year compared to 23-24. Has anyone else received the first update?

tacinmosh Posted March 18 Posted March 18 3/18 update, ARO Biosciences. But can someone explain to me why people seem to think updates are good? Is there evidence from previous years that awards went to people with more updates? If everyone's status is still "Under Evaluation", I'm not sure what the updates mean.
confessionsofaphysicsgeek Posted March 18 Posted March 18 (edited) I also got the 3/18 update today. AFRL/ Material Science 5 minutes ago, tacinmosh said: 3/18 update, ARO Biosciences. There is a lost from last years thread with a google doc with lists of updates. Edited March 18 by confessionsofaphysicsgeek added more context
