Does anyone know anything about Marquette's MA program? It seems like it's funded, but their website has very little info. They have rolling admissions, which I think means I can apply anytime, though their financial aid deadline is in February. Thinking about a last minute application as I freak out about getting in...

I was doing that for a bit, too. I basically decided that 11 apps (more in your case) was plenty for this year. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. That said, I've been mentally planning for the worst case scenario. Look into Marquette with a mindset of "maybe I'll add it to next year's list." I've done some of that already (Miami/Ohio, Stony Brook, UNH, Temple and possibly Kent State are already in the "maybe next year" pile). I figure if I do go 0/11, I'll have a head start on next year and something to look forward to (Miami of Ohio would have EASILY made my short list if I had looked into it earlier). If I get an offer this year, then it's all gravy. :)

If you are looking at MA programs, you should look at St. Bonaventure University in western NY. I'm currently doing my MA at Bonas. They have a pre-professional track that is funded (not that great, but funded--they offer a 50% tuition waiver and then give you the other 50% as a teaching stipend. In effect, it's a tuition waiver with no stipend, but it's also REALLY cheap to live here). They currently have a rising star in American modernism, and they are hiring right now (both of the finalists are early American scholars). The identity of the program is being geared towards American lit--they are replacing outgoing Brit Lit folks with American Lit scholars pretty regularly. It might be worth a cursory look.

Oh I hear you, I thought the same thing, about going overboard with applying. But I have more than just getting in at stake: the location would be very beneficial for my partner and me. Our financial situation is very tricky right now and having a convenient location for various reasons will really help us. But yeah, I should probably just sit back and wait, though I have the money, I feel obligated to apply to all the places that interest me so as to have as many options as possible.

Does this St. Bonaventure U have rolling admissions, or a deadline that hasn't passed?

I'm currently attending Marquette's MA program. I have a teaching assistantship which offers full tuition, $13K/year stipend, and health insurance renewable after each year (all you have to do is fill out a form to get the funding renewed). There are more TAs than there are RAs here, but I'm not sure of the price difference. I think my TA class and the TA new class this year was around 13-15 students (both MA and PhD). As a TA, you teach 3 sections of RhetComp per year. If you do apply to MU, try to get it in by the funding deadline, or if you can't, contact the DGS and/or grad school to see about the funding. There are some people here who are unfunded I think but I would not recommend that route. You can send me a message (if that's how this works, this is my first post) if you want to know more about the program.

They have rolling admissions. If the "worst case scenario" does come to pass, you should come to our graduate conference (3/18-3/19). Heck, you should submit an abstract anyways--If you didn't get in anywhere, you can check out the program, and if you did get in, you can celebrate in a nerd-centered venue! I copied the conference website below.

How is Marquette's program from a student perspective? I'm thinking of applying there for my PhD and I would love an inside look at the department. I'm going for specifically 20/21 century American (I notice they are currently looking for 2 tenure track professors in this area). Especially interested in working with Amy Blair, Heather Hathaway, and Jodi Melamed. Any input would be very appreciated.
