I’m not international, but I did apply directly to NSERC (haven’t actually started PhD yet) and I haven’t heard anything yet! I think the people who have heard back were notified by their universities!

No emails have been sent by NSERC yet for any applicant

But this was through the university, not NSERC, right?

After applying directly to NSERC, I was offered an award but notified that I was not eligible to hold the award internationally. Does anyone know how often international awards later become available to applicants in this situation?

PSA for those in a similar situation! I just learned through correspondence with NSERC administrators that all the top ranked applicants are offered an unconditional (internationally-held) award. Presumably this means there will be quite a bit of churn because applicants with no intention of leaving Canada received such offers. It is also possible to request a Summary of Results Letter with your application score and ranking, but this can take several weeks. Hope this helps someone!

If I were awarded the NSERC Canada Graduate Research Scholarship — Doctoral (CGRS D) award, how would I accept it if I am currently studying at a foreign university? Should I send the email to accept for now, or do I need to complete the forms now?

Probably you can do either. Just be sure to accept before deadline whether you have the forms complete or not.

So when I accept the award via email, I just write an email saying I accept it; no need to email them the form? I do not need to worry about the award being held at a Canadian institution. On the notification document, it stated: "You must hold your award at an eligible Canadian institution. You will be notified if an award becomes available that can be held at an international institution."

Thanks for the info! How exactly does one ask for the letter, do I just email them?

The letter you should have received which indicates if it can be held internationally. For the exact ranking/scoring, you email NSERCScholarships-BoursesCRSNG(at)NSERC-CRSNG(dot)gc(dot)ca asking for it and they will upload it to Extranet.

Based on what I've seen so far for overseas-based applicants who got accepted, the location of tenure either says "You will be notified if an award becomes available that can be held at an international institution" or "You are not eligible to hold your award at an international institution." I was wondering if you're in the second case then does this mean you won't be able to hold the award at an international institution even if one becomes available, or that it's plain impossible that one which be held internationally becomes available because of your ranking?

This is confusing because I'm in the latter case ("not eligible to hold the award internationally" as opposed to "will be informed if one becomes available") and when I emailed the NSERC administrators they said "...it is possible that an award that can be held at an international institution may become available. If you choose to accept your offer of award, you will be notified if an award that can be held at an international institution becomes available." which seems like the two different wordings for overseas offers in the acceptance letter really mean the same thing.

Also did anyone who applied from an international institution get an internationally-held award? And did anyone at/will be at a Canadian institution get an international award?

Did anyone receive the confirmation of acceptance from NSERC? I sent the email to accept the award but have not heard back.

Yeah, I am also confused, based on an earlier post: "the top-ranked applicants are offered an unconditional (internationally-held) award." However, has anyone received an award notification stating that their offer is unconditional and can be held at an international institution?

Wanted to ask: when you submitted your NSERC application, did you list the tenure location as a Canadian university or a foreign (international) university?
