Looks like a couple of notifications from Delaware went out today (for the MA). Anyone know if the PhD notifications go out around the same time?

I posted one of the MA acceptances. I think that MAs are notified separately than PhDs. I remember hearing something about that, but I apologize that I can't recall exactly.

Congrats! I've heard great things about Delaware's grad program (some of my old undergrad profs spoke VERY highly of it). I applied to their PhD program (I loved Julian Yates' book on Renaissance "object lessons"), but the results board is oddly sparse on that one. It has more results on the MA for UDel than the PhD.

Huge congrats! Seems like really good funding also!

Thanks guys! I'm excited, they were one of my top choices for MA programs. Also, this really takes the edge off waiting, I could get rejected from everyone else and still be happy.

I was the other Delaware acceptance yesterday. I assumed they were calling to say something was missing from my application, so it was a very pleasant surprise! I probably sounded like an idiot on the phone, I was so shocked. Looking forward to the recruitment weekend in March.

I felt the same way- I was at work and I was just speechless because I wasn't expecting it. I was embarassed when I hung up the phone but hopefully they understand.

What is your area of interest? I'm early american/colonial lit.

I also noticed you got a summer research grant. I didn't get one of those! :) At least not that I know of...

oh, a little of everything, haha. Modernism, contemporary US fiction, ecocrit, and literature about immigration (especially Latin American/border issues) are things that sparked my interest in undergrad, but I could see it totally changing. That's sort of the whole reason I applied to MAs rather than PhDs--because I'm still interested in everything : )

I also applied to Delaware's PhD program and have yet to hear anything! The waiting is already starting to make me batty though, esp. since people have started hearing from CUNY and I haven't heard from them either... *fingers crossed*

It's tough to even guess at when/how we might hear from Delaware. There have only been TWO acceptances on the results board, and the most recent of the two was posted in 2007. I don't know if that means UDel just isn't as popular a school amongst Grad-Cafe folks or if they just reject a lot more people.

Do you mean for the PhD program? Cause there are multiple ones from this year for the MA. Looking at their graduate students, it looks like they have very very few phd students. I personally think Delaware seems like a good program, but I've been told that they are ranked "too low." Not saying it's right, but that's what a prof told me. Though, I'm an colonial Americanist and I found this recently: http://www.english.ucsb.edu/undergrad/aftermajor/gradrankings.asp Scroll down to colonial American lit.

Yup, I meant the PhD. And you should know better than to tell a bunch of result-crazed spastic applicants that one of the programs they are still holding out hope for only had "very very few phd students." (Kidding...mostly :) )

There was a PhD rejection for UDel posted today via e-mail. I haven't heard anything either way. Anyone else heard from Delaware PhD? I've heard great things about the program, and it's really close to my brother's family.

Edit--Never mind. I just checked the website. Rejected.

Has anyone who was accepted received more info on the recruitment weekend next month? Dr. Larkin mentioned it on the phone, but my acceptance letter did not offer any details. I'd like to make travel plans soon.

Has any implicitly rejected M.A. applicant received official notification? I haven't heard a peep from Delaware, and am curious to know if I'm on some sort of unofficial waitlist or completely out of the running.

No, I have been wondering the same thing. He mentioned that they would pay for everything and I thought the details would be in the letter. But they weren't and yeah, I don't know how to make travel plans. I was thinking of emailing him in a week or so.

Congratulations to the admits! Way to be! :)

Congrats to all Delaware acceptees!

To any M.A. applicants out there who still haven't received some kind of notification: Ed Larkin (the DGS) just e-mailed to let me know I'm on the wait list. It seems there's still hope! :)

If I remember correctly, we are supposed to receive a separate letter regarding the weekend visit. I might be wrong though. I don't really trust my memory at this point.

If any of you guys go to Delaware for the MA, you'll have to report back here on the PhD class. I'm getting more and more curious as to whether they admitted ANYONE to their PhD (4 rejects posted, no admits, and there hasn't been a UDel PhD admit posted to the Cafe since 2007).

Posted

Aren't there some schools that favor their own MA graduates for admission into the PhD? I wonder if Delaware might be one of those, and maybe that could explain the lack of PhD acceptances posted on the board.

This is a good point, and with absolutely no evidence, I will say that Delaware seems like they are like this in regard to the PhD program. I can't cite anything, but I do remember going on to the PhD as being more of an option there, as opposed to a place like UVA that discourages their own.

First of all, congrats to those who got into Delaware ( I was, um, rejected unceremoniously). In re: the MA/PhD question, I was corresponding with Dr. Larkin, the DGS, over the summer, and he admitted that the available PhD slots were first considered for internal MA applicants, and then--if any are left over--externals are considered. So obviously that's not good for externals, although one of the students ahead of me at Villanova did get accepted into the PhD program last year as an external MA applicant. I guess this was kind of a miracle. The girl was a genius, if that explains the miracle.

Perhaps the lesson for next year is to not apply for the PhD as an external MA unless you feel confident you're a genius?
