What are my chances of acceptance after an interview?

Hi,

I applied to 9 schools and only have gotten 1 invitation to a recruitment weekend... So I can not stress enough how freaked out I am that I might only have one chance of getting in.

So what are my chances of getting accepted to a program after the interview? If it helps, the school that I have my interview is University of Michigan.

I heard from one of my advisors that in Clinical Psych they have many candidates that come to an interview (for example, 5) but will only accept 2 or 3. HOWEVER, I applied to Developmental Psychology so would I be competing with other students for acceptance too??

Anything helps,

Thank you...

Congrats on your interview!! I too only have one interview so I understand how you feel.

The good news is that once they invite you to an interview, your chances of acceptance are raised a great deal. However, it is not a guarantee and it varies for each school on

chances of acceptance after an interview. They could take 80% of those they interview or only 20%. But they are definitely interested in you.

Good luck!!

Entirely depends on the program. In some cases, you're basically accepted, in other cases, not so much.

There were 15 prospective students at the one interview i went to for 5 spots in the area (also developmental). That being said, there are 5 spots and 7 faculty members and each faculty member had at least 1 student interviewing.

So... its a crap shoot. If you got the interview, you're qualified for admission. If you don't get in after interviewing its probably not because you did something wrong, but rather that your POI couldn't take anyone, or someone else was a slightly better fit.

like above people said, the chances are very high, but it depends on the program. if they flew you out, wined and dined you, that means you are their top candidate and have strong chances of getting in. i mean, they wouldn't spend their resources on you if they didn't want you on the first place. they like you, and that's why they invited you... so that both you and them could get a feel of each other on a personal level. i got a phone call this afternoon from the PoI i want to work with, and i interviewed at this university a couple weeks ago (they paid everything). i was freaking out as well, because i was the one with the lower hand. but things turned out well.

so, hang in. you should be getting the good news through phone or email in a few days.

just want to comment that I find it interesting that out of 9 schools, the one that you got invited to interview is one of the best psychology program in the nation... is grad school that much a crap shoot? that someone can be good enough for a school like UMich but not 8 other schools? Unless those 8 other schools are stanford, harvard, etc...

It really is a crap shoot from what I can tell. I know this is completely anecdotal but I knew someone who was accepted into UPenn's clinical psychology program but was rejected from several mid-range and even safety schools. The whole process is insane.

Thanks everyone!!

All the encouragement and advice is so helpful!!

I guess I'm just going to have to put my best face and be as outgoing and friendly and "smart-sounding" as possible....

By the way, the whole process does seem like a crapshoot-- I mean UM was the top program I applied, the other schools were mid-level. It seems like research interests and LORs are some of the most important things they look into, but what do I know... I'm still waiting for an acceptance.

Thank you all! I'll keep you all posted.

First of all, Good luck at the interview!!

I will agree that this whole process is a crapshoot, last year I got accepted to the two top places in my area, and rejected (the day I returned from interviewing at this school) by the lowest tier school I applied to where I had exceptional research fit. But I also want to stress to make sure you not only impress the faculty (which I have no doubt you will), but also the graduate students in their lab. Make sure to send a thank you email to your host as well as the professors that interviewed you . It may seem like a small thing to have to remember, but I can tell you from experience that it actually helped me get into a school.

  • 3 weeks later...

From what I can tell, most of you talked about PhD programs. I have an interview in a few weeks for a PsyD program and I'm really nervous. Does anyone know what sort of outcomes PsyD interviews have? I don't know if I should expect 15 people or 50, if not more. Furthermore, I have no idea how many of the interviewees they'll accept. What I do know is they have 20-24 slots for the incoming class. That probably means they'll accept 30ish people, right? (Figuring some won't end up going). Also, I hear POI's being thrown around a lot in this forum. Since I'm going for a PsyD rather than a PhD, do I still need to be looking for POI's? Should I worry about not having some already? I don't know about the faculty research at my interview school. Is this something I should look into? Or am I better off focusing on my own clinical/research experience while being interviewed?

Any help on PsyD interviews would be appreciated =]
