barricades Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Well, a little research on these boards suggests that last year they took zero people off the list. But we can still hope....I mean, the economy is getting a little better, right? I'm not exactly sure how NYU operates its waitlist, but from what I've talked about with other schools (Yale and Chicago), it seems like they avoid having a list with people ranked. Instead, if an Europeanist drops out, they'll extend the offer to another Europeanist, same with Africanists. This way they can maintain a balance in the cohort.
K Ryan Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 So do you guys think all acceptances have probably gone out already and those of us waiting in the dark are done for?

I heard back from the professor who wrote one of my LORs who currently works at NYU. He said the way it works is basically like that....first they have to under-yield overall. That might never happen (and sounds like it didn't last year) Then if it does under-yield overall, they decide who to take of the waitlist based on which field under-yielded the most. He said it's quite possible I'm the only Africanist on the waitlist, and I imagine it might be the same for all fields. He also said the African field made either only one or two offers (yikes) so yeah, it seems pretty unlikely for me.

Ugh, one or two offers in the African field, and only one possible waitlisted - looks like another rejection for me :-(

tapshoes Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 I also went to the Prospective Students Weekend, and received my official Wait List notice today. I'm not entirely surprised--at the weekend, I could tell that some of the prospective students might make a better "fit" with the Department. To those of you still waiting to hear, don't give up hope! This is my second time through the application process, and overall, my impression has been that this whole thing can be a bit of a crapshoot.
superfluousflo Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Just received my rejection from NYU. This after my POI effectively offered me a spot in the program in person at prospectives' weekend.
TransnationalHistory Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 I also just got a rejection email, after I was offered a spot on the wait list! I'm looking into it, since this was a generic letter and the wait list offer was personal and from different people, but who knows what's going on. @Silas: That seems unnecessarily cruel, I'm sorry. The idea people who get invited (and their hopes built-up) still get rejected is bad enough, in my opinion.
TMP Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Ugh. I think I will just have to say that somehow my relationship with NYU manages to get jinxed by somebody every time I try to apply.... Jinxed again!
sidiosquiere Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 My dreams of living in New York are over. Got rejected today too. I guess its the Midwest for me! sankd 1
