I was accepted at Rochester as well! My field is Renaissance Drama, early modern culture. I am actually in the MA program right now and will most likely accept this offer.

That probably doesn't bode well for me, as I am also an early modernist. Congrats on the admit.

I am sure you will get into Maryland. This was my only shot. Good Luck Tybalt!

I was also admitted this morning; my area of interest is British Romantic poetry, but I am also interested in early modern poetry (Donne, Marvell, etc.).

Congrats!! Will you be at the visiting days in April?

Thanks, same to you. And yes, I plan on visiting (I'm only an hour away). Rochester seems to be my best option, but I'm a little anxious that they only have one professor working on Romanticism.

Congrats to all the other acceptees! I'll be at the visiting days and I'm excited to meet you all:) My field is Arthurian lit (medieval and post-medieval).

Yes, congrats to all accepted!

I have a bit of an etiquette question, though, if you guys don't mind... Here goes:

I know I won't be attending Rochester for various reasons. I obviously want to be very respectful when declining their offer. I also want to decline as soon as possible, as to not put any potential wait-listers through more unnecessary stress... However, in the email from the DGS I recieved, it was said that they would most likely call sometime in the near future. Here's my question: Would it be rude to reply with a polite email declining the offer, or should I wait for the phone call? I know this might sound incredibly stupid, but I keep going back and forth about it. I'm sure they won't even give it much of a second thought either way, but I don't want to leave anyone scratching their head because of the way I've gone about things... Advice?

I think it best to email and decline the offer. I felt really conflicted about that with my first offer, who was quite solicitous as well, and I dithered around how soon to let them know I was declining. Based on advice from my letter of rec writers and people on this board, I emailed them weeks ago. Both the DGS and the grad school people were nice in reply and thanked me for letting them know early so they could contact other applicants. I would think that the folks at Rochester would respond similarly. Good luck and congrats on your offers!

Thanks! Your response pushed me over the edge; I went ahead and sent an email declining the offer. Hopefully this allows a waitlisted applicant to be notified fairly soon!

I was wait-listed at U of R this afternoon (via post). It was a very nice letter from Rosemary Kegl. It didn't say anything about ranking the list, just that it was a "short" wait list. A friend of mine was also wait-listed at Rochester (though she has an offer in hand that I think she prefers). It's not an admit, but it's another chance in the wait-list lotto (and both my wait-lists are from schools in my initial top 5).

I'm happy to see this : )

Me too. I was actually born in Rochester, but moved away when I was 5. I bet things seem shorter there now...

I haven't heard anything yet...emailed the grad secretary hoping she'd let me know my status and she just said the letters will go out late this week or early next week. If I haven't heard by now, do you think I'm out of the running?

I don't know. I just got the wait list letter yesterday. I hope there's still hope (my office mate is still waiting for his first admit, and he applied to U of R as well). Good luck!

Thanks, Tybalt, for the kind wishes, and congratulationss on the wait-list...who knows, maybe we'll see one another at Rush Rhees in the Fall...

I'm not sure how many people are still checking TGC, but I'm curious as to whether anyone else from this thread will be starting at Rochester this Fall. I sent in my official acceptance a week and a half ago (so excited!). Dr. Kegl said that the incoming group would have 3 Early Modernists (she seemed somewhat surprised that they were taking that many, but I'm thrilled about it! I've spent the last two years as the ONLY Ren scholar in my entire program). So, anyone else planning to spend the next 5 years putting up with my bad jokes? :)

Very cool. Any idea what sub-field you're interested in?
