qbtacoma Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Fellow academics, and especially you fabulous librarians, help me out! How do I keep silverfish out of my papers? Currently my storage system consists of my stuff in a cardboard box. I've noticed the silverfish but there doesn't seem to be much damage (yet). What should I do to store things properly for the long term - put them in plastic, or...what?
newms Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) Scan them and have them digitized? At least that's what I would do. Edited February 23, 2011 by newms communications13, Chai_latte and repatriate 3
communications13 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I second make them digital. If you must keep paper form, air tight plastic containers.
pepper Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I agree with Newms - digitize the crap out of those silverfish!
qbtacoma Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Yeah, those are good suggestions. Thanks!
MoJingly Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Wait, silverfish, like, actual silverfish? This isn't some lingo for an internet virus or computer glitch that I don't know, is it?
qbtacoma Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 The pretty little bugs which eat paper, the glue in book bindings, skin flakes, etc.
MoJingly Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Strangely, silverfish are very pretty. I didn't know they eat paper... I googled "silverfish" and to my HORROR, some people have gotten them confused with house centipedes. There is nothing... NOTHING... that affects me like a house centipede. (Don't google it. But I know you will...) It could be worse. You could have THOSE. They FEED on those pretty little silverfish. Wughhhh. Shake it out.
qbtacoma Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Strangely, crickets get me. I think it's the way they move. As long as spiders and other critters don't crawl on me, I'm actually okay. Now, you need to Google kitties. Kitties. Not centipedes. Yes, they are soft and nice and have only as many legs as they need. Kitties. HyacinthMacaw 1
Roccoriel Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Urgh. I hate house centipedes. I only moved to the US last year, and when I saw these things in the basement of our house during fall for the first time, I freaked out. I hate all kinds of insects, but these centipedes are by far the freakiest.. them and their legs! I hate them. *cries* I love most insects but house centipedes scare me to death. Seriously. And the fact that they are the only bug I'm afraid of makes me really angry and hateful towards them. Too many legs!!! trina 1
Poppet Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) Oh god. I definitely need to google kitties now. Reading this thread was a MISTAKE. Edited to add: This helped. Edited March 10, 2011 by Poppet HyacinthMacaw 1
runonsentence Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Oh god. I definitely need to google kitties now. Reading this thread was a MISTAKE. Edited to add: This helped. It was a mistake, I agree. Nothing equals the look of horror on my face when I see a house centipede. My boyfriend thought "someone was dying" when he saw my house-centipede face for the first time. Thank you for a kitten in a bowl.
singlecell Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I used to think house centipedes were the worst bug around until I went hiking in Michigan. There were these... things, centipede-like in shape but bigger, blacker, grosser, and spinning huge silvery cocoons in the crooks of tree branches. I don't know what they are but I still have bad dreams about them.
AshHead Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Oh gosh I know what you mean about those centipedes. They would always be in our bathtub when we woke up and looked like they were straight from jurassic park with legs sticking out everywhere. As far as the silverfish go, I've seen a few of them here, but not enough to bother me. I Googled it for you and this may help get rid of silverfish. I guess it depends on how desperate you are to get rid of them, but you can always just put your books/papers in a plastic bag.
awvish Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Sorry, but I've gotta report in as a minority: silverfish (on Google Images) sort of look...too...easy to pop? for my taste. But they are sorta pretty. I think the house centipedes are cuter. All those legs... /contrarianism
InquilineKea Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 God, I hate silverfish too. Anyways, has anyone paid an assistant to digitize things for them? I really don't have the time to digitize all my collections.
