Hathaway Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I found out I was waitlisted at Wake via email last Friday.... good or bad, you should probably hear soon!! good luck Thanks for the support!! I called them this morning to see what was going on. Turns out, they lost my application...I don't even know what this means for me.
PsychGirl1 Posted March 25, 2011 Author Posted March 25, 2011 Accepted to NYU! Congrats! I got accepted to Nova with a tiny stipend so I'm relatively happy. Does anyone have any knowledge of BU's masters program? It is a bit skimpy on their website and I am wondering about its quality. It said about 52% of graduates who respond to their survey go on to get a PhD, and I think it's only 1 year with no thesis/research? Can anyone confirm that? I also couldn't tell if funding was available, but it seems like it's not. Thanks!
maxwell Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I still haven't heard from a Masters program (experimental Psy) I applied to, so I figure that can't be good. How unusual is it for a Masters program to not have made a decision at this point?
suchasoc Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 When did you hear back from Villanova? I'm still waiting to hear....maybe thats a bad sign? Congrats! _synapse Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Hey guys! LisaLisa, congrats on getting into VU! I was accepted to Villanova with a full assistantship, and am so excited to be starting there in the fall! Do you think you're going to accept the offer?
suchasoc Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Congrats to both of you, its a great program! Esp with the funding! Did you receive your acceptances recently? Hey guys! _synapse Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Congrats to both of you, its a great program! Esp with the funding! Did you receive your acceptances recently? Thanks so much, I'm ecstatic! I got a letter from the department early in March stating that I was being recommended for admission, but only received my official acceptance from the grad school about a week ago. I was informally notified during a campus visit that I am being offered financial aid. Are you still waiting to hear? The department secretary, Louise Carbone, was very helpful and informative, so I'm sure she'd try to give you more information if you called the department. Good luck!
suchasoc Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Thanks for the info and congrats again! I got a call from a Villanova number earlier this week but missed the call as I was in class. I called back but the extension did not go through my caller ID, it took me to the main switchboard . I got an email from a current student. Did that happen to you? Good idea, I'll call the department on Monday when they open. I am just so eager to hear back haha! Thanks so much, I'm ecstatic! _synapse Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Yeah, I got the email from a student also. I had the opportunity during my visit to have lunch and chat with some current students, but I'm trying to think of something thoughtful to ask this guy, since he took the time to write, you know? If you find out that you are accepted or waitlisted, you definitely should try to visit campus if you can! The students, professors, and staff were all so friendly and made me feel very welcome. It was such a nice experience, and really made me want to accept their offer. The number I used to reach the psych department was 610-519-4720. Good luck again, and feel free to ask me any questions . . . and I'd like to hear how things work out for you! Thanks for the info and congrats again! And I've exchanged emails with a prof about research but I would love to meet the people in person! Really a great program, hope to be admitted!! Yeah, I got the email from a student also. suchasoc Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Got my letter today, I'm in @ Villanova. They said funding info (and if i got any) will come seperately? Im so excited! Fingers crossed for you :)
_synapse Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Congratulations, good for you!! I still haven't gotten my official funding information either, so stay tuned for that. Way to go!! PsychGirl1 Posted March 27, 2011 Author Posted March 27, 2011 Congratulations, good for you!! I still haven't gotten my official funding information either, so stay tuned for that. Way to go!! Congrats to both of you! I'm still undecided if I'm going to take it. The stipend was a half stipend, I think, and significantly less than I was expecting. And I have my interview day with April 8th, so I want to see how that will go as well. I talked to a Professor where I live who was pretty against me going into a Masters program- she thinks it would be better to get work research experience and take some night classes instead of doing the full-time masters program. So between that and the fact that I'd have to move from Boston to Philly, I'm a bit undecided about what to do. I'm from the Villanova area, and I don't think living at home is a good option for me, but I can't really afford much on the stipend. Are you guys definitely going?

_synapse Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I'm definitely going . . . sent in my postcard last week! Sorry your funding at Nova wasn't better, but hopefully your interview at Drexel will help you make some decisions! Best of luck, and keep us posted Congrats to both of you! samblues Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Hey Everyone! I'm new here so please help me out. Im a junior psych major. Im going to be graduating a semester early so im doing my research for grad school now. I decided Im not sure Im ready for a Phd or Psyd program so I think Im going to do a Masters in mental health counseling. I want to be able to do private practice someday and I understand that in NYS you get licensed and then you can do that. I am confused when I read all your posts about Masters in Psych programs that you have applied to. What career can you have with that degree? When I went to CW Post open house I asked that question and their response was "none". I thought that was harsh but maybe they had a point. Also there are about 15 MHC programs in the NYC area alone, have you all not applied to them for specific reasons, or do you just apply near where you live? If there are any other areas on this site I should be inquiring please direct me as I said its my first time here. Thanks in advance for all your responses.

Sorry your funding at Nova wasn't better, but hopefully your interview at Drexel will help you make some decisions! Best of luck, and keep us posted Congrats!! I was wondering... do you (or anyone else) have any thoughts on the quality/respect of the Villanova masters vs the Drexel masters? Both are M.S. degrees, and both offer research with professors and general coursework.
DKT Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 AHHH Still waiting on BC! I will be so upset if I get in after I accepted another program...
nisf Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Accepted off the waitlist to Villanova! Whew! Now just waiting to see what (if any) financial package I receive...
PsychGirl1 Posted May 5, 2011 Author Posted May 5, 2011 Accepted off the waitlist to Villanova! Whew! Now just waiting to see what (if any) financial package I receive... Congrats!!! I've decided to enroll at Drexel- I just really liked the program when I visited, whereas when I visited Nova, ti just didn't vibe with me (not sure exactly why, I know it's a great program). Good luck!! :-)
ra9v Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Congrats!!! I've decided to enroll at Drexel- I just really liked the program when I visited, whereas when I visited Nova, ti just didn't vibe with me (not sure exactly why, I know it's a great program). Good luck!! :-) Hi LisaLisa86! Congrats on your acceptances to the Masters programs! I have gotten into 3 programs myself (Drexel, BU, and American) and I'm just having such a hard time deciding where to go! I was just reading the entire thread and saw that you had also applied to both Drexel and BU for the Masters. I think I am pretty much deciding between Drexel and BU at this point, and there are things I like and don't like about both programs. My ultimate goal is to get a PhD in Clinical Psych (which is what I had applied for initially actually, but then decided to go for the Masters when I didn't get in this year.). I was just wondering if you had ended up hearing back from BU and/or had visited the campus, and what you think of the program. The whole Directed Study aspect of it (rather than an actual thesis) bothers me, and I don't know if I would be able to get into a PhD program after going to BU for just 1 year. But then again, the advisor I am interested in is doing more relevant research for my interests, and if I work hard in the program I know I can get more out of it. Plus going to school for just 1 year would save so much money, AND Boston is such an awesome city haha! BUT I really love the way Drexel has their program set up and encourages you to do publications/presentations, etc. The advisor I am working with is also doing great research (just not as closely related to be interests as BU - but I don't know how much that matters for a Masters.) What made you decide on Drexel? Any advice you could share would be great! I just thought it would be helpful to talk to someone who has been dealt with the same programs as me.... thanks!!
