whoknows Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Hi, I was wondering since we (the applicants) are able to accept and back out of an offer by April 15th, can the institution back out of an offer of acceptance? Is this even possible?
Eigen Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 There's nothing legal holding the school to their acceptance... That said, it's not common for them to take it back. surprisecake and ZeeMore21 1 1
newms Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) I guess they have their reputation to maintain - it wouldn't look good if they get a reputation for rescinding offers, so they wouldn't do so without a legitimate reason. I guess if you get an offer conditional on you successfully completing your bachelor's, and you don't then I could see an offer being rescinded. Other than that I'd imagine that it would be extremely rare. Just keep in touch with them while you're still deciding, so you don't somehow fall through a crack (although this is extremely rare). surprisecake Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) My acceptance letter from IU-Bloomington said "Space may be limited, so please reply as soon as possible!" What. The. Hell. does that mean? It's not like i'm booking a cruise, IU. You'll hold my place til April 15th and you will damn well enjoy it! Maybe it's like an airline and they deliberately overbooked, knowing/gambling that some people would not show up for check-in?
Amalia222 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 My letter of acceptance came with a precondition that I pass a criminal background check. So, assuming I don't get arrested, or pull some sort of Lindsay Lohan shoplifting trick, I should be OK. :-)

What I did, when I got my acceptance, was to write a nice email to the DGS, expressing how happy I was to have been selected, and that while I still needed time to make my decision, I was thrilled by the opportunity at the school. That way, they hear from you, get positive vibes, and you still have time.

ck03yh Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Haha! I like your response! This actually doesn't sound so weird to me...I had a really off-putting experience with a school (who shall remain nameless, let's call them school "Z"). They called to accept me in mid february- really early. I called back to say I really appreciated the offer, and that, I would let them know when I could (implying I had applied to other schools- like most people) I assumed this would be the end of the conversation. The director of admissions proceeded to ask "well, how long do you need to decide?" I said, "Well, it's only mid feburary, and I've applied to some schools out of country, so maybe by April?" Even that is an early date, and he actually told me "Oh we can't wait that long." He then started listing all the great things about the school, said kind of sleazy car salesman stuff like "Oh, so we're in business then.." when all I could do was express my appreciation for the offer. He wanted me to accept over the phone.. I was really offended actually. Applying to grad school is a serious decision and I told him, "I put alot of time and effort into applying to several schools I felt would be appropriate, and I need to be able to consider them all if given an offer." The story actually doesn't end there-after I received my next acceptance, I contacted school "Z" to decline their offer.I was already so off put, and was waiting for another acceptance just so I could say no to these people. I sent a really nice email simply stating I was respectfully declining their offer. That SHOULD have been the end of the communication. No, the director called me again, leaving me several messages asking me if I was sure, and why?? I actually decided to not reply because I shouldn't have to- I had already sent an 'official' declination through email. One night, around 8 or so, I receive a call from an unknown number. It was the director, again, asking me why I wasn't accepting their offer, and making jokes like "what, are you taking a sabatical, or what?" I swear to God, verbatim.Needless to say I felt really disrespected by this institution, and schools should give you ample time to decided between offers- it's a big commitment on your part and theirs.
