    SAIC pros/ cons

good to hear Mike! I am so stoked!!! P.S. Chicago also has great stand -up comedy, if you happen to like that sort of thing...
  2. interesting topic! Just to weigh in, I too decided to leave the country for my MFA. I was actually offered full funding from a canadian school, and chose to travel to the states to do my graduate studies. I recognize Im in a lucky position to be able to spend more to do that, but I wanted to do graduate work outside of canada, so that If I return to teach, I will have that other experiences and perspectives to draw from. But in the end, I think the integrity of the institution with respect to your work, wherever it is, is the most important aspect.
  3. Haha! I like your response! This actually doesn't sound so weird to me...I had a really off-putting experience with a school (who shall remain nameless, let's call them school "Z"). They called to accept me in mid february- really early. I called back to say I really appreciated the offer, and that, I would let them know when I could (implying I had applied to other schools- like most people) I assumed this would be the end of the conversation. The director of admissions proceeded to ask "well, how long do you need to decide?" I said, "Well, it's only mid feburary, and I've applied to some schools out of country, so maybe by April?" Even that is an early date, and he actually told me "Oh we can't wait that long." He then started listing all the great things about the school, said kind of sleazy car salesman stuff like "Oh, so we're in business then.." when all I could do was express my appreciation for the offer. He wanted me to accept over the phone.. I was really offended actually. Applying to grad school is a serious decision and I told him, "I put alot of time and effort into applying to several schools I felt would be appropriate, and I need to be able to consider them all if given an offer." The story actually doesn't end there-after I received my next acceptance, I contacted school "Z" to decline their offer.I was already so off put, and was waiting for another acceptance just so I could say no to these people. I sent a really nice email simply stating I was respectfully declining their offer. That SHOULD have been the end of the communication. No, the director called me again, leaving me several messages asking me if I was sure, and why?? I actually decided to not reply because I shouldn't have to- I had already sent an 'official' declination through email. One night, around 8 or so, I receive a call from an unknown number. It was the director, again, asking me why I wasn't accepting their offer, and making jokes like "what, are you taking a sabatical, or what?" I swear to God, verbatim.Needless to say I felt really disrespected by this institution, and schools should give you ample time to decided between offers- it's a big commitment on your part and theirs.

Hi Guys- Thanks for the responses. I would like to find roomates, because it's just too expensive on my own! I know it's hard to coordinate finding people and signing leases before actually being there- For now, I've decided to sign up for SAIC graduate housing, and hopefully find roomates for the second term- either for January 2012, or the following year. i know I'll have to pay a cancellation fee but still way cheaper than staying in residence!
  5. The same thing happened to me. I think you're in!!

Hi guys- well I know application season is coming to a close and we're all starting to decide where to go, and making plans for next year! I'm a canadian( from Toronto) moving to Chicago to study at SAIC as a grad student- I wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to live- are their cooperative housing options, or apartment living that current grads look at? I'm in my late 20's so I'd be ideally looking for perhaps a more independent living style- anyone lookin' for a roomate? I'm a super-awesome nice person I'm curious- do many grad students live on campus, or do they usually live off campus, because I'm open to dorm style living if people have had good experiences doing that Anyway, just lookin for advice on the topic! Thanks guys
  7. Hey! First, off congratulations on getting an interview at Yale- that's a feat in itself!! I'm sorry about your waitlits from SAIC, but it sounds like it's going to work out for you-you've got some great options so congratulations! good luck on your Yale interview!! I just wanted to let people on this forum to know I received snail mail from SAIC too, it seems their decisions are starting to roll out I've been accepted to their sculpture MFA program- I'm really happy- it was my first choice all along
  8. Hey! I think it's fine at this point in the game to politely request the status of your application. I find most places won't tell you your results over the phone, but they will say when the decision letters will be mailed, and if they have gone out already.
  9. Hey- thanks for letting me know! I'm checking my email and mailbox like 5 times a day, so hey, let me know if you hear word- I'll do the same
  10. here are my results thus far-
  11. Okay, so I just received an email for SAIC telling me about financial opportunities....but i haven't received an acceptance yet...godammit what does this mean?! Anyone else get an email from SAIC talking about financial aid, but hasn't received an offer yet? It was personally addressed to me, so I'm not sure if that means anything....argh, I just want to know what my options are already!!
  12. You could try letting your US choices know that you have received a firm deadline from another institution, and politely request if it's possible to let you know your unofficial status before that deadline via email. I tried this with RISD Sculpture and SAIC; it depends, of course, on how late they interview you; they may or may not be able to accommodate. RISD was actually understanding, and said I could check back with them by the deadline. I have a FEELING I haven't been accepted there anyway, since I haven't heard a peep out of them...but then again I haven't been made aware of any acceptances gone out yet for my program.
  13. Hi Guys! good luck to everyone applying! I thought share my results, and it might shed some light of these universities time lines- MFA Sculpture Fall 2011 York: accepted via phone Feb. 15th Concordia: accepted via email on March 9th Guelph: interviewed on Feb 5th, rejected by snail mail (arrived March 2nd)

    SAIC interviews

I interviewed for sculpture on the 4th. I loved meeting the current grads- they were so welcoming, and the faculty offers such a variety of perspectives still waiting to hear back....
  16. Hey older dog! In terms of applying to grad school, I'd say cast your net wide, but not too wide. I think it's to think of 3 or 4 alternatives to what you consider to be your top choice for schools. Not just because it provides a safety net, but as you move through the application process, your top choice may in fact change based on who you talk to, and how each school treats you as an applicant. On the other hand, applying to too many schools could just drive you crazy; I applied to six, and I found that to be one too many. Have you thought about applying to the Cranbrook Academy of Art? I have been accepted there for sculpture- just came back from visiting, it was incredible!!! I LOVE the sense of community and the critique based program...just an awesome work environment!! Anyway, best of luck!!!
  17. 29! I will be 30 starting in the fall.
  18. Congrats Kimpusity! what discipline did you apply for at SAIC? all the best!
  19. Hey! Thanks for sharing the clip- I am actually visiting Cranbrook the weekend. Although this is really outrageous, I will say that the shit is hitting the fan in pretty much every state, Wisconsin as well...didn't Rhode Island just fire a bunch of teachers??...state governments are broke...I'm not sure is it a reason to choose to not study at a particular school, especially one that has such a great reputation. Still, food for thought for sure.
  20. Hey Guys Just wanted let anyone waiting on Concordia MFA Sculpture to know, I received an email notifying me of acceptance. So check your emails no mention on financial aid though... good luck to everyone!! MFA Sculpture 2011 Cranbrook: accepted SAIC: interviewed (crossing fingers) RISD:?? - Canada York: accepted with full$$ Concordia: accepted Guelph: interviewed, then rejected (snail mail) on March 2nd
  21. Hey Designr! I am leaning towards Cranbrook for sure- I'd just like to have all potential offers on the table before I make a final decision I'm going to visit the school this weekend! have you been??
  22. me too! I mean, come on RISD and SAIC MFA sculpture....what kills me is that SAIC has one of the earliest deadlines.... MFA Sclupture 2011 Cranbrook: accepted SAIC: interviewed RISD?? - Canada: York: accepted with full $ Guelph: rejected snail mail Concordia:??
  23. hey! congrats on your SAIC acceptance- just curious- what program did you apply for?
