A friend from the Centro just told me about a Classics blog for graduate students trying to find professor jobs:

I was so happy to get into grad school in classics, and now I'm already terrified about finding a job as a professor

Yeah, I've seen this before. There's not a lot that can be said. For every person who has ever told you to "pursue your dream," you should be required to read one page of this bilge. Bilge it is, but it accurately reflects the job market.

And if we look outside classics, there's the ongoing crisis of "contingent labor" in academia in general-- something we usually escape, since classicists aren't generally hired to teach ten sections of freshman comp, but worth being aware of as responsible future academics. (Hopefully.)
