I haven't done it myself but I think it is a very good idea. Go for it!

I've done it and it's never a problem. They're always happy to hear that an applicant is very serious about the degree and is willing to work on improving applications. It's never been an issue for me.

There have been a couple of threads recently (within the last month or so) on this issue. You might try searching for them. But the main idea is - yes, do it, there is no harm in that. Just be polite and not too pushy.
