Four PhD offers:

OSU: medi chem;

EMory: chem;

UTSW: chem;

Stony Brook: chem.

I want to do medi chem in the long run. In OSU, I do medi chem. In UTSW I do chem and its chemistry program is closely related with biology, which is very important to medi chem. Emory has a very good comprehensive ranking and good reputation. Stony Brook is in a good location.

It is a difficult decison for me as to choose medi chem or chem as my PhD major and which institution wo choose?

what is your advice?

I am studying at Emory... I think you will lose a big chance if you reject the OSU offer. OSU is not comparable with others... be sure and go ahead...

In my opinion you are getting bad advice. If you want to work in Med Chem after your PhD then you need to get a traditional PhD in organic synthesis or methodology. I've been working as a BS level chemist in Med Chem for about 3 years and not one person that I've ever met has a Med Chem PhD. I don't even know why they're offered. As far as the biology, pharmacology and toxicology it's basic and simple stuff you need to know and you learn it on the job. Seriously DO NOT get a Med Chem PhD.

Hey Just going to share some info. I'm currently concidering Stony Brook's Biochemistry and Structural Biology Program.

Stony Brook is really nice and while I have little info on their Chem program I know they do have some good chemistry groups that I interviewed with. However, the location is not as good as you might think. My significant other works at SB and is bored out of his mind there. There is very little as far as night life, and other than the beaches and a few touristy things, just isn't much to do for 5 years. Also, it might seem close to nyc but its an hour by drive if there is no traffic, its nyc, there's traffic anytime you'd want to go, or 2 hours by train, which is expensive. So its better than a lot of middle of no where places but its really not as close to NYC as most people think. But if you only want to go a few times a year then it might be ideal for you.

I currently take some biochem classes at OSU. Its chemistry program is well ranked, i liked the grad orgo instructor i had and hated the grad inorgo instructor i had for what that's worth. There are tons of opportunities but I know almost nothing about their med chem program.

Hope that helped. Good Luck.

Since i talked about long island i figured I should add that Columbus is a great city, I was very suprised upon moving here how big it is and how much there is to do, I'm very sad to be leaving it. The OSU campus alone has anything you could want from museum exhibits, to sporting events, to the arts, etc. Downtown isn't much to get excited about but the short north and campus areas can be a lot of fun. Plenty of boring weekends but plenty of fun ones too.
