  1. You might be screwed. Here's the deal a wide range of disciplines won't help you either. You should really have keyed in on specifically what you're interested in and try to get as much experience in that area as you can. My final undergrad GPA was a 2.9, then I went to industry and worked in a very closely related field. THEN, I applied to grad school. Still got a lot of rejections but I did get into 2 schools that I'm very happy with and will be attending an ivy in the fall to work for an advisor I couldn't be more excited about. Also don't do a PhD just because you got into one. If you work for a 'budget' advisor no one will hire you. tl:dr: More research/publications especially in the field you're looking towards.
  2. You should be picking professors you want to work, or professors that you know can get you a job or postdoc that you want. Not schools by ranking.
  3. Hm, I do organic synthesis but I did meet with Jennifer Prescher (I think she does Chemical Biology) and she seemed like she's doing some interesting stuff. They said that most grad students live in the grad student housing (which is really nice and modern). I don't remember anything else particularly. You accepted UCI without visiting?
  4. I visited UCI but ultimately turned it down. It was a real nice department and I really like the campus. On my visit they told us that there are NO entrance exams. Did you visit? Not the 2nd weekend I suspect if you did. Who do you want to work for there?
  5. I've never met anyone who did that, but maybe they're around somewhere. I've been advised by serveral colleagues not to do it (med chem phd), but I guess maybe other companies want it.
  6. No one in industry has a PhD in med chem
  7. Should you really trust your life, health, and well being to so called 'experts' or 'scientists?' You're taking a big chance. Haven't you heard about all the birds and fish showing up dead?
  8. Yeah you shouldn't go to CA even at night it's light out from all the fallout. Just get a nice place in east palo alto
  9. All of life can be explained by the Godfather
  10. In my opinion you are getting bad advice. If you want to work in Med Chem after your PhD then you need to get a traditional PhD in organic synthesis or methodology. I've been working as a BS level chemist in Med Chem for about 3 years and not one person that I've ever met has a Med Chem PhD. I don't even know why they're offered. As far as the biology, pharmacology and toxicology it's basic and simple stuff you need to know and you learn it on the job. Seriously DO NOT get a Med Chem PhD.
  11. What kind of chemistry do you do? EDIT: Nevermind
  12. My advice is this, go to whichever school you can work for the better adviser. I'm a medicinal chemist for a major pharmaceutical company and we recently just hired a few new PhD chemists. I can tell you that for industry jobs the name of the school doesn't matter at all, it's all about who you worked for. If you went to Harvard but your adviser was some no name then good luck getting a job. If I were you I'd go to Illinois. We regularly have Scott Denmark out as a consultant, it's a really strong program and his graduates get a lot of offers. Not so sure about M Christina White. Ultimately it's your choice, but who's good to work for at Yale? I can't think of anyone I work with or know that did their PhD there. I'm sure there's some quality groups, but that's just an industry prospective. Good luck on your decision! Also, unless your parents are synthetic organic chemists and know what it's all about don't let them make your decision for you.
  13. I feel you, were in almost the same situation except for different reasons. I'm at least waiting until I go visit and talk to the advisor I want to work for before signing any papers. Good luck though!
  14. Medicinal Chemist for big pharma. It's what got me into grad school.
  15. I've been posting shortly after hearing back from each school. I don't mind seeing results from schools I'm waiting for, and I've been able to anticipate two rejection letters in my mailbox before I even got home. I think it's a great tool but I guess everyone has their own opinions.
  16. Yeah, and some receivers, and some good coaching. Not to worry, Harbaugh will turn things around.
  17. I'll be watching. I'm a huge 49ers fan, so I have to cheer for Aaron Rodgers since we passed on him for Alex Smith in the draft in 05.
  18. Has anyone contacted potential advisors about joining their groups yet?
