I just made flashcards using the Barron's high frequency list for every single word where I didn't know the definition, and then learned 7 a day every day for about 2 months. At the end I was basically revising ones I didn't know so well.

I've been reading through the Princeton Review's revised gre book for strategies and I feel that vocabulary is still very important for the text completions. The good thing is, the text completions have information in the sentences which help you use process of elmination to get the correct answer. I would still make flash cards to learn high frequency words and also study roots and prefixes so that if you come across an unknown word, you can at least guess the definition of it.

Good luck!!! I'm taking the new gre this September as well!

How should I go about preparing my vocabulary??....with the change in the format of the test is vocabulary equally important

I take this to mean you are taking the revised version? I've read that the new GRE still places some emphasis on vocabulary, but has contextual cues to help you select the right word. Regardless, if you don't know what the word means, all the context in the world isn't going to save you. I have flash cards that I take with me everywhere, in the event that I have a few minutes to review. I've also taken to sticking post-it notes with difficult terms and definitions all over my apartment, so I have no choice but to see them constantly and memorize the information.
