It's always recommended to have your luggage labeled - the airlines all have tags and labels that you can use to label your luggage. The airlines also give you a baggage claim sticker that they stick onto your boarding pass that has a corresponding number tagged to your checked luggage that they use to track it - make sure that you don't lose this sticker during transit. I guess luggage gets lost when those tags get displaced/removed somehow? I've had luggage left off a connecting flight before - but was able to get it back due to the baggage claim.

So these tags and labels - do I get them at check in? Can I stick several labels on my luggage - just in case? I would hate to lose it!

Last time I flew with luggage that was not hand luggage was many years ago so I have forgotten all these details...

You can put as many labels and identifying marks as you want on your luggage and the airlines would have them at the counter when you are checking them in (of course you can always label them before). The airlines put the baggage claim tag on your luggage when you check them in at the start of your trip.

And how can I label my luggege before? I thought that on a label there will be some special number (the same as on the sticker in my boarding pass) and I won't get this special number till I check it....

You can label your luggage with a sticker or a tag and write your name and address/phone number/email on it. At check in, the airlines but a special tag on your luggage that has a number and a bar code on it. This is the baggage claim tag seen below:

Then the airlines will give you a corresponding baggage claim receipt (1 for each piece of checked luggage) that they usually stick on your boarding pass like this:

Some people put distinctive marks or brightly coloured straps around their luggage so that they are easily identifiable when you go to collect them from the baggage carousel.

And I just wanted to throw in that even though my luggage has been lost twice, both times I got my luggage back.

The first time was in New Zealand and my luggage actually made it to my front door before I did and the other time was with United. It took forever to get my things back and the company was terrible to deal with but in the end my luggage and I were reunited.

I was told that though sometime luggage gets lot it is very seldom lost forever. I hope it is true
