synthla Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 To keep my mind occupied until February rolls around and the history people don't seem as chatty as last year, I'm curious what field everyone is going for/interested in studying? I suppose it could best be described, in general terms, as 15th-17th century French intellectual/religious history.
Auzzfest Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 20th century Latin America. My central interest is urban/political history in the Andean region and Mexico. Any guesses on why the History board is so slow this year?
Sonic Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Guesses could include: 1) Too tired to read or type another word. 2) Too busy constantly refreshing admission status websites. 3) Occupied by Googling "what to do with my history BA". For the record, I study pre-American Revolution labor and economy in the Lower South and Caribbean, and I am guilty of all three mentioned offenses.
storiaitaliana Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Modern Europe, particularly 19th century Italian political/social history.
canadiana Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Late medieval, early modern Mediterranean. Especially interested in religious conversions, etc.
misterpat Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Anyone gotten an early rejection yet? I figure it's too early for an admit, but I'm wondering if any of the first-cut people have found out from any school with like a Dec 1st deadline. I've been checking some of those websites in fear that I am one of them.

I've been checking some of those websites in fear that I am one of them. I know the feeling. If it helps (and I apologize if it doesn't), two of my rejection letters from last year's application cycle were dated February 5 and February 20. The former had a December 15 deadline, and the latter December 1. Hang in there!
limeinthecoconut Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 This whole early-reply-could-mean-they-really-want-you-or-they-think-you-totally-suck makes me so nervous that I don't dare to check my e-mail. Anyway, I work on modern Southeast Asia/East Asian history, and intend to work on socio-cultural history of modern Vietnam.
ohheygradschool Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Got into Wisconsin-Madison's History of Sci., Med., Tech yesterday. w00t w00t.

misterpat Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Also, bubo: You didn't get an e-mail or anything? Just checked on the website?
canadiana Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Hi guys, Did anyone get an email from Brown University recently? This is part of what I received today, and am wondering whether it is a de-facto rejection (as if to say: "your application was so bad that you're not making it past the first round. You'll be receiving a rejection letter soon.") "Thank you for applying for admission to Brown University Graduate School. We are reviewing applications and will soon prepare decision letters. If you applied to multiple programs, you will receive a decision for each program. Please note that you can only matriculate into one program. If you accept an offer, any and all remaining Brown Graduate School offers are withdrawn. Thank you for your interest in the Brown University Graduate School."

Unless someone has experience with a letter like that, which I admittedly do not, I wouldn't read into that as representative of a decision going either way. It's vague to the tenth power.
synthla Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I think you can only preserve your sanity by not reading anything into anything, until you get that actual acceptance or rejection. Admittedly easier said than done. I had one professor tell me a few days ago that I'd been recommended for admission. Got excited, but haven't heard anything since. It is very early in the process, so I'm not taking that one way or the other until I get something official.
misterpat Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 For anyone else waiting on UCSB: In an e-mail from the graduate secretary, she said applications are currently being reviewed and that decisions will be available in the first two weeks of february. So, you at least have a solid week where you don't have to check the website.
Shancis Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Well my interests are rather varied. I have applied to programs for French political and social history, particularly in light of Anglo-French relationships, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, with particular interest in the Bourbon Restoration.
ohheygradschool Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Also, bubo: You didn't get an e-mail or anything? Just checked on the website? Neither. I got a phone call from the department. The status check website still amusingly says 'pending.'
ohheygradschool Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 2nd acceptance: Minnesota- Twin Cities, history of sci, tech, med. Yaaaayy! Haven't heard from the department yet though... it was a generic acceptance letter on an Apply Yourself 'click here' sort of thing. Still, not complaining!

Congrats - I know where and for what I'm applying next year, if this year doesn't work out. You seem to have picked places that act fast and what a stress relief that must be...
daydaydvd Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 anyone has some thoughts about Minnesota- Twin Cities's history department. It was ranked around 22nd by many places. Do those rankings reflect the real strength of the department?

synthla Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I also happen to be applying to UCSB (a more popular choice than I realized apparently), but more than anything, I'm just looking forward to the first indication that anyone has heard anything from a history program. At least knowing that decisions are actually coming out, I won't feel quite so ridiculous with my status checking and gradcafe results watching.

Just this week I found the "results" posting board here--and now wish I hadn't! Checking it 10 (or more..) times a day isn't helping my anxiety level.
