It's official, I will stay in the Midwest and attend UW-Madison. Anyone else coming?

I am! Moving back to the midwest (thankfully) from the east coast. Can't wait!

Great, hi theodidactus and mwincoming. Mw, what are you studying? Do either of you have ideas about neighborhoods yet? Ideally I want to live ~3 miles from campus in any direction so I can get a workout commuting by bike.

Congrats on your acceptances and decisions!

Congrats on your acceptances and decisions!

Congrats to you, too! I'm studying counseling psychology. You? I've been emailing with some current doc students and here are some nearby neighborhoods they've mentioned: Vilas, Willy St., James Madison Park, and Eagle Heights. Those are all relatively close to campus (not sure of the mileage).

I'll be in Madison this fall too :) Congrats to all of you!

Have you guys already looked for places to live? I'm aiming for the Willy neighborhood cuz I hear it's where the cool kids hang (ie. less undergrads, more grad students). I already have several leads. I'm hoping to sign my lease when I visit in a couple weeks.

Are there any ladies on this board who are looking for roommates?

I'm doing my Ph.D. in Microbiology. I have been looking at craigslist a lot, but I really want to see the apartments as ogopo mentioned before I commit to something. It seems like you can get some really good deals on apartments, like 2 bedrooms for under $800/mo. I really desire hardwood floors, but a lot of the photos I am seeing have carpeting. I should ask some of the current students in my program for apartment recommendations-- I'll share any good information I get.

There's already a nice Madison city discussion going on, but I'd love to chat with other new Badgers out there about the school, programs, moving, etc. Sharing ideas and passing the time until I move to the fair city and start my MS/PhD program! Fall 2011, here we come!

Hey! I'm going to be going to UW-Madison next year for the PhD program in organic chemistry. I'm excited to get to know other people going there too!

I'll be moving there too (PhD in Ed Policy) and don't know a soul (and have never visited) woohoo!

Happy Official Decision Day! Hurray for already-made decisions for grad school - Wisconsin here we come!

Cupoftea, if you've any questions, let me know. I certainly don't claim to be an expert on Madison or UW - I've only been there twice! Perhaps because of that (and a combination of my curious and planning-ahead personality and a boring desk job), I've done a ton of research on the city and the school. I also have a few friends in Madison who are so, so helpful.

I just accepted a spot in the Speech Pathology Grad Program. Very excited to start!

Would love to meet up with other students sometime once the fall arrives - I'm from New York and don't know a soul in Wisconsin.

I'm not attending UW, but I do have two friends that are pursuing their MAs in History there. Both of them have been concerned about their funding streams, since they come from the state government. My one friend is a TA and gets her health insurance covered by the school, and the changes in the public employee system may force her to pay more into her health care. Just something you guys may want to consider if you haven't already. Our wonderful governor is pulling the same crap in Ohio, but fortunately I will be getting my degree in DC (oh, and I didn't get any funding to begin with).

This topic has already been discussed in another thread and the consensus was that the cuts by in large will not affect the grad students. Cost of health care may rise from (I may be misquoting) $12 / month to around $43/month. Too bad, but this is still quite affordable. As for the rest of the issue, I have read repeatedly that the state has invested too much money in their tier one research school (which brings in a lot of people and money to the state, has high standing in many fields) to take a course of action which would make it less competitive to prospective / current students. So I'm not too worried about this issue. Your friends have funded History MA degrees? That alone is pretty awesome. I don't think they would get funding pursuing an MA in most schools.

I agree, Renster, I can do ~$40 a month for what I understand is excellent health care (it even includes preventative dental care and some money towards eye care).

See you all there in the Fall!

I am going to look at apartments May 10-12. On the off chance anyone else will be there at that time, send me a message!

Single cell and renster are correct - the biggest changes that most grad students will see will be a slight increase in UW's phenomenal health care deal. When I was visiting in March, I learned about two things: my program and Scott Walker ;-)

Single cell - good luck finding apartments! where are you looking? who else has housing lined up? I *should* be signing a lease this week :-) Very excited to have my own place in an old victorian house near Willy St.

Thanks :) I will be looking on the isthmus and the west side, possibly even south of campus. I am totally new to Madison so I need to check out the feel of the various neighborhoods. I want to live near a good bike route, since I plan to commute that way. Do you think 2 days is long enough to see several apartments and get a feel for things?

I think two days is sufficient! A few thoughts from my experience apartment hunting in March...

1. Landlords in Madison are required to provide 24-hour notice to tenants that they will be coming by for a tour, so it pays to arrange your visits ahead of time.

2. I visited 7 apartments in a few hours when I was visiting... it was tiring, but do-able. However, the apartment I am going to rent I found after my visit.

3. Make sure the rent INCLUDES HEAT. I heard horror stories from older students about their $1500 heat bills. Most places do include the heat costs, and they will advertise so.

4. Neighborhoods: the west side of Madison is suburban and has little character. The Vilas neighborhood (south) is very quiet - lots of faculty and families. I'd avoid W Johnson St and near the capitol west of S Blair St. East of S Blair is the 'Near East Side,' and is very lovely. After walking through Vilas, downtown, and Mansion Hill (near campus - lots of fraternities), I was smitten with the balance of quirky charm and quietness in the Williamson St/Jenifer St/Spaight St neighborhood. That's the Willy st/Marquette Neighborhood. Near Tenny Park is also very nice.

5. Bike paths are everywhere, and car-drivers are bike-aware - so no fear about that! And all students get a free bus pass, just in case you're like me and can't bear biking in a blizzard.

Hope that's helpful! you know about http://campusareahousing.wisc.edu/ right? very helpful resource... also, avoid Madison Property Management; Mullins is a bit grody, too.

Whew - that's all! good luck.

I'm glad that this has been thoroughly discussed to death already. I should have known better than to doubt the informed nature of my fellow Grad Cafers. Good luck to you all at UW. I have heard very good things about Madison. My sister lives in Milwaukee, so I've been there several times, but I've never actually made it out to Madison (maybe if Walker had actually let them build the rail connection... but I digress). I know Wisconisn has an excellent university system, and UW is one of the jewels of that. Enjoy your time there.

Hey shemeno, I'll be there in the fall for NEEP as well. Coming from Carnegie Mellon.

Hi all!

I'll be going to Madison in the fall as well. I made a really long post on the Madison City Guide regarding my home search so I will post the link if you want to check it out:

I was actually able to find a place with only one day of visits, which is good because I was sooo busy during my two days there. Madison is awesome and I'm looking forward to the move :)
