Strangefox Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I have a confession to make - I am big fan of stick umbrellas I have a couple at home and I am afraid it won't be easy to take them to the US with me.... I know I can buy umbrellas there! But I really like my umbrellas Is there a way to take them with me??? I guess they won't let me take one on board as a piece of hand luggage, right?
beanbagchairs Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Stick umbrellas are indeed cool I've seen some older gentlemen carried them on board. They are usually stored in the coat cabinet. You may want to check with your specific airlines.

Kathiza Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I once brought a poster roll as additional piece of hand luggage (i.e. I had a small trolley, a handbag and this poster roll) - it was no problem. I don't see why it should be any different with a stick umbrella.
Strangefox Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 I wonder if I can take 3 pieces of hand luggage on board: a handbag, a laptop and a stick umbrella... I guess I should just check with airplane companies...

I think it depends on the airline...United says you can bring umbrellas in addition to your regular carry-on items, but when I flew American back from London with a stick umbrella they made me check it since I already had a backpack and purse. So, yeah, check with the airline.

If you brought a poster, did you have to lose your under-seat carry-on or larger carry-on? Am I better off printing it when I get to the conference?

I think you should call your airplane company and ask them because regulations differ.
eco_env Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I think you should call your airplane company and ask them because regulations differ. but the official rules are probably more stringent than what i can get away with in practice, which is why I'm interested to know what other people have done.

I believe (and I hope!) that there is no difference between official rules and practice, otherwise there would be too much confusion. But may be I am wrong. May be there IS difference. I hope somebody more experienced in flying will come forward and tell us.

I'm back to report my results: I brought a poster tube, backpack, and tote bag on the plane, but only put the poster tube in the overhead compartment. On some of my flights, I stuffed my tote bag in my backpack. When the flight was crowded, the flight attendant specifically told me that I would need to put my backpack under my seat and could only put the poster tube in the overhead. I also had 1 flight that was so crowded that I had to put everything under my seat (or sticking out, in the case of the poster tube). So, I wouldn't count on being able to bring a poster tube as an extra piece of luggage- it might not work on a crowded flight.
