JGunn3
Hello Everyone, I've been in a psychology Masters program for about a year and I will be applying for PhD programs in the fall. I figured I would list the programs here in the hopes that members here might either be there, or have been there, or perhaps just know something about the programs they would like to share. A little background, I'm a suicide researcher and therefore am not applying for a particular type of degree (e.g. Clinical, Developmental, Social...) but rather am applying at programs with people researching in my field (although all fall but one are Clinical Psychology PhDs). The programs I'm considering are: (1) Rutgers (Newark Campus)-Social Psychology PhD (2) Rutgers (New Brunswick Campus)-Clinical Psychology PhD (3) Fordham University (New York)-Clinical Psychology PhD (4) Fairleigh Dickinson University (NJ)-Clinical Psychology PhD (5) University of Delaware-Clinical Psychology PhD (6) Temple University-Clinical Psychology PhD I'm interested in feedback from students who have applied, gone there, gotten rejected, gotten in...basically anything anyone has too offer. I've already reached out to people at the universities but I thought I'd ask you gals/guys as well. Thanks!!

You will find all the information you seek in previous posts across the forum, so some quick searching/browsing will help a lot Short advice from me though: research fit is super important so that's great you know what you want to do. for clinical PhD's you'll need a GRE around 1300 and a GPA 3.8 or higher on top of outstanding LOR's and lots of research experience. Do you want to do clinical work at all? You can go into academia with a clinical degree but you also are trained as a clinician.
jynx
Having just gone through the Clinical Psych PhD application process, I have a couple tips: 1. Only apply to places where the research fit is rock solid. There will always be other candidates whose qualifications are as good or better than yours, so I think most of the time it comes down to fit. 2. You should apply to more programs, as Clinical PhD programs are ridiculously competitive. Even if you have stellar qualifications (published, GRE over 1500, GPA above 3.8, great letters of rec, etc.) you should still probably apply to at least 10 programs. There are so many excellent applicants that it is really a total crapshoot, no matter how great you are. Is there a reason why you need to restrict your search to the northeast? Expanding your area will give you a lot more options. Those are the main things I can think of right now...feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions and I'll be happy to help
JGunn3
Thank you both for your advice, I'm getting married in June 2012 and my fiancee will be starting a Masters program at TCNJ in the fall, so I can't really leave the east coast. Thats why I'm only looking at programs in this area.
