Hmm...if you call the grfp number, it goes to a voice message stating that they don't have a time frame on HM and additional fellowships. Are there any guesses at all about how many additional fellowships as opposed to HM they'll dole out this year.

Have to say I'm sad I didn't get it in the first round, and doubt I'll get it in this next batch :(

"Access to your rating sheets will be available in the next

several weeks. You will receive an e-mail with login information

as soon as the rating sheet site is open" <---- from the NSF email

For those who applied last year, did you have to wait several weeks to read the rating sheets? Does that mean for those in limbo, the funding decisions won't be made for weeks?!

Yeah, I think something I read said all rating sheets will be available once everyone has received funding/HM...so it looks like a few more weeks to go. I'll try not to be obsessive - there's still three more weeks in the month!

hey just woke up, sorry for not reading all these pages... if i didn't get any e-mail but am not on the 2009 awardees list (other people in my division are)... is that a pretty solid "no" ?

Haven't heard anything yet... do we have any idea how many rejections were sent out? Are my chances for an award still good? I'm feel lucky to still be hopeful but I'm worried this won't turn out well.... who knows....

i feel rather doubtful for us chemists- there are already 62 winners...

Well, that certainly wasn't worth a five-month wait. I got jack shit.

I particularly like the text in the winners' notifications: "This award is based on your abilities and accomplishments as well as your potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the U.S. science and engineering enterprise." I guess I have none of those qualities. I should defect to another country. Screw this award.

Seriously, though, congratulations to all the winners. You bastards.

I just called and theres no timeframe for anything. Additional awards, REJECTIONS, and honorable mention will be made. Even for majors posted. For those rejected, has your fastlane status changed from submitted? The lady on the phone said that should be definitive, with those in limbo still having submitted as status.

You just had to capitalize that word, didn't you! :(

My hope just went back down the toilet after temporarily reappearing from the sewer of broken dreams

I was rejected and status still says submitted.

ok... I'm sorry to keep posting and I'm so sorry for everyone who has been notified of rejection already. For those of us who are still waiting to hear I'd like to say that the budget for NSF DOES say that there will be a 30% increase in GRFP for this year. I'm not up-to-date on all the numbers but since it appears as though the number of awards listed is pretty close to the same as last year, perhaps... there could possibly be another 200 awards announced still??? maybe??

correct me if I'm wrong... but actually... no... don't correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure I'll know soon enough.

Additionally on a more specific note; I'm in life sciences- molecular biology and there are only 18 awards in my area thusfar. I feel like this area should be better represented than this so I'm really REALLY still crossing my fingers. :?:

i'm one of those in limbo.....and i couldn't resist (i was already working in OOCalc)

the life sciences awards for the past 5 years

2009 = 257

2008 = 240

2007 = 209

2006 = 227

2005 = 261

life sciences-ecology

2009 = 39

2008 = 34

2007 = 29

2006 = 31

2005 = 39

Yea...so those of us in limbo might be in the same rejected boat soon, don't worry..=). Has anyone tried calling to verify that they are in limbo and what their chances might be?

The biggest killer is often the broader impacts. This is where figuring out a good way of how to donate your time in the next six months is an awesome idea...

Yeah, anal chem already has 5 winners. There were 5 last year and 3 the year before. Even with a 30% funding increase, they might award an additional one or two at the most.

This doesn't bode well at all.

I called NSF,

I know many people feel lke we shouldn't be calling but I was extremly polite and I didn't bother them for that long.

I just asked how many rejection notifications had been sent out, the lady said "I can't comment on exactly how many but there were a significant amount sent"

additionally, she said that the number of honorable mentions differs from year to year, that the number of awards already awarded in your specific area doesn't mean much (so for all of the people thinking the number allotted for their discipline have already been given out, have heart!). I forgot to ask for timeline but I'm sure someone has already done that. So although I'm trying not to get my hopes up, it seems that things are not looking too bleak for us limbo people yet. (I'm chosing to ignore the fact that if our applications had been that great we would already have one... I know my area isn't all that interesting or popular so I'm shocked that I'm still in the running even!)

Thy coarse and vulgar tongue doth do me a misservice! Who art thou to question the legitimacy of the byrthes of these goode people? Fie upon thee, fool, for thou art unworthy of the GRFP, but for thy foolishness, thou art worthy of damnation eternal! The fyres of hell shalt burn thee hence forth, while thy piteous screams shalt reverberate for an eternity! Thou shalt be a victim of the payle horse, creeping death, and thy protestations shall be but in vain!

Alrighty, I'm back and caffeinated.

I applied last year and didn't get squat, largely because my personal statement failed to focus on broader impacts. After several months of work and some careful tweaking of my essays, I won one this year. For those of you who are eligible for future rounds, I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have regarding assembling a solid application, as I've learned a lot myself since 2008, so feel free to drop me a PM. My field is evolutionary bio, but my experience could be applied broadly, I'm sure.

Best of luck to all who are still waiting!

the number of HMs each year is huge... ~1400. even if they picked another 200 people, that only gives us a 14% chance. overall, our odds are way worse than before, because the pool of applicants is more selective now.

FYI - I received an award but have NOT gotten an e-mail, so there probably are people who have been rejected who have not gotten e-mails either who they intend to notify very soon. Good luck all.
