denidzo Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Not for cultural anthropologists, it isn't. This is one of the reasons biological anthro people and cultural anthro people are so confused by being in the same department. Really! Bio/Physical Anth and Linguistic Anth folks in our department almost never hang around together, we really have no common frame of reference - and to some extent that includes the archaeologists (except for those heavily into agency, performance, and other theoretical underpinnings). If they were ever to eliminate our department, the Bio/Physical folks (in our case mostly primatologists) would go to Bio Science, the Archs to Classics or History, the Lingoes to that department, and the culturals to Sociology, Cultural Studies, or American Studies. That said, it's not that I never use stats. I am resurrecting the Varbrul set of analytical tools that Labov used in his earlier studies (Martha's Vineyard is the classic) to take a look at instances of particular performative utterances in temporary recurrent liminoid communities. Then there's always the analysis of the incidences of prepronomial affixes and of infixes in indigenous North American languages, in a comparison to Mohawk (Kanienkeha on Akwesasne).
denidzo Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 You're right. I'm sorry, I am just down because my time to be saved by the NSF will end on Monday and after that, I don't think all the money at the NSF would really help me.... well that's an exaggeration... but still. I was also told that the area that I'm in will definitely not be one of the fields that will be getting a lot of extra fellowships... if any. I'm sorry to be negative. Good luck to everyone! Yes, but not getting a lot of additional fellowships does not rule out getting any (semanticist here). I feel your pain on the hearing by Monday, though. We'll be thinking of you, and hoping that when we hear, you're one of the lucky ones!

This is one of the reasons biological anthro people and cultural anthro people are so confused by being in the same department. Question for you - I am teaching four field intro in the fall, which of course includes bio/anth. What topics do you feel are absolutely essential for a freshman to learn in bio, since they may never go on to major in the field? I have three weeks to cover a brief look at the discipline, and certainly don't want to get heavy into something that may not serve them well.
scienceteacher7 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I haven't posted much, but I've checked this forum from overseas sometimes several times a day in hopes for some news. I have really appreciated everyone...the characters writing in old English style were silly, but I did not like the ones who faked the emails saying "results were coming in." Mean people. Yeah, this is eating at me everyday...I am tired of always being alternate, finalist, or hm...I would love to get it sometime! This reminds me of my favorite Monty Python song...The Galaxy Song (and people...we know that the numbers aren't all right on...bbc looked at 'em a while ago see http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A2163133 but let us appreciate Monty Python in all their glory without academic commentary...we're probably all a little tired of that thing at the moment). For Video: http://pythonline.com/node/18116711 Lyrics: And I paraphrase the intro line after the organ donation skit... "Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown, And things seem hard or tough, And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft, And you feel that you've had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough, [sING ALONG EVERYONE IN LIMBO 2009] Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour. That's orbiting at ninety miles a second, so it's reckoned, A sun that is the source of all our power. The sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see, Are moving at a million miles a day, In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour, Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way. Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars; It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side; It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick, But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide. We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point, We go 'round every two hundred million years; And our galaxy itself is only one of millions of billions In this amazing and expanding universe. The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding, In all of the directions it can whiz; As fast as it can go, the speed of light, you know, Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is. So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure, How amazingly unlikely is your birth; heya And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space, 'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth!" -Eric Idle, The Meaning of Life, pasted from http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/ ... B10006DCBC Other Python classics at.... http://pythonline.com/archive-utube Let's get to 200 quoting Python...I'll get you started on a couple sketches and let's see who can quote them best without referring to scripts....The fact that I know these so well probably says a little about why I never win these things!! "The norwegian blue, beautiful plumage isn't it...." or "In Mercia?" or "Mein hovercraft is full of eels..." or "I wanted to be...a lumberjack..." or "That's a capricorn is it?..." or "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition...That is our chief weapon surprise...surprise and..." or my favorite skit... "You could say 'Dennis.....'"
denidzo Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 This reminds me of my favorite Monty Python song...The Galaxy Song Thanks for this! It made me laugh. And my favorite Monty Python quote ... "What makes you think she's a witch?" "Well, she turned me into a newt!" "A newt?" " ... I got better."

BioMedSciMed, which are the fields that will not be getting many more fellowships?!
scienceteacher7 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Yes, yes, yes...this is the spirit we need... I'm watching the Hermit sketch now... "Is not the miracle of the juniper berries enough?"
scienceteacher7 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I'll take some more space.... "right, who threw that..." the stoning sketch
Higgins_the_Brave Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 3... we did it! :-D you can come out now results, kthxbai
scienceteacher7 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Ah, yes, Python takes up space any time...I am having academic nightmares...
denidzo Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 3... we did it! :-D you can come out now results, kthxbai Yay, we have uttered the magic incantation, the numbers are in our favor, we have posted 200 pages worth of ... well, I was going to say intelligence, but maybe that's not always the case!
liatris Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Umm, is it against the rules to say I don't want to know anymore? At least now I have the possibility of getting a fellowship, but once we know, no possibility, no hope. Can we stay in limbo? Limbo is fun, limbo is a party-game, lots of fun people like to limbo.

You know, I was thinking the same thing a while ago. Not knowing is eminently preferable at this point to getting an email saying it's HM. This way, I can pretend I'm actually still in the running, that my proposal was sound, my references excellent, my background sufficient, and my work would contribute to the greater discipline. If I hear HM, it means, kthxbai.

denidzo Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 What is kthxbai? I feel silly for asking, but I'm not an acronym person. Oh, I feel silly now. It's LOLcat. It's means "okay thanks bye."
PSi_light Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 You know, I was thinking the same thing a while ago. Not knowing is eminently preferable at this point to getting an email saying it's HM. This way, I can pretend I'm actually still in the running, that my proposal was sound, my references excellent, my background sufficient, and my work would contribute to the greater discipline. If I hear HM, it means, kthxbai. HM is still something to be proud of. Yeah, it'd be nice if it had a bit of money attached to make you prouder, but it certainly beats outright rejection. I've already celebrated mine and I want the end to come so I can tell people without having to explain the situation. Sure my parents don't understand that's its not the same as honorable mention in science fairs (where that is the participation prize name). Tomorrow is the 2mth anniversary of my brother's death, so maybe the results will come out then. I don't mind HM because I know that family obligations have seriously changed my grad plans anyhow. For those of you who need this to stay in grad school, I wish you luck.
foobaraq Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 HM is still something to be proud of. The first person to say that to my face is going to get punched in the nose.
PSi_light Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The first person to say that to my face is going to get punched in the nose. I hope you were able to convey your anger issues in your application.
liatris Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 PSi_light, Sorry to hear about your brother. Totally puts my award angst into perspective. Everyone PSi_light is right, honorable mention is something to be proud of. At the very least we were all recommended for funding.
denidzo Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Everyone PSi_light is right, honorable mention is something to be proud of. At the very least we were all recommended for funding. I know, I know. And back when I thought my app would be rejected in the first round I was comfortable in that knowledge. But then they got my hopes up with the limbo thing. You are right, HM is still prestigious, and it means that our ideas for research are sound, we can convey them intelligently, and that this can be the basis for future requests. But .... all the waiting has made me hope for more.
Moxie Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 3... we did it! :-D you can come out now results, kthxbai Woohoo! Something this week would be nice, thanks NSF.
