Kitkat Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Hi, I just took my GRE today on June 18, 2011, I got a score of Verbal: 590 Quantitative: 680 Is this a good score for graduate program. This is a good enough score to get you into a good number of schools, depending on what field you are going into, and how competitive the schools you are looking at. I have seen a some schools with a minimum of 1200 composite, which you are fine on, but more competitive schools I have seen average scores between 1300-1350, but those are programs in geosciences. Since I don't know what your field is, I don't know how the most competitive programs look for average scores. At the same time, if you have a really strong application outside of your GRE score (stong LOR's, strong SoP, good GPA) then your GRE still might be fine for getting into even the most competitive programs. So basically it is really hard to say.....
OldGrad2012 Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 Thanks for the reply, I am going into graduate programs in Biochemistry and molecular biology or possibly immunology. I am looking at Stanford, University of Washington, USC, UC San Diego, and maybe some Ivy league schools like Harvard or Yale. Is there a way to look at the GRE scores of their previous accepted students.

On the one hand you don't need particularly high verbal score for Biochemistry. On the other hand, if you want to apply to Ivy League schools... May be it would be better to get at least 600 verbal. And I would say that quant would better be around 700 at least. That said, your score is not bad and I guess you can get in with it. If the rest of your application is perfect. You can study more for GRE and take it again in August-September, if you are worried. There is still time. Just don't spend all the time preparing for GRE. Work on your SOP and polish other parts of your applcation as well. BTW I started working on my SOP in July.
OldGrad2012 Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 Hi, Sorry, I am not big on acronyms, but what is SOP stands for anyway? Strangefox Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Hi, Sorry, I am not big on acronyms, but what is SOP stands for anyway? SOP = statement of purpose ...and another one that you will see often on this forum is POI = person of interest = a professor you are hoping to work with.
OldGrad2012 Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 Hi all, If my GPA is around Undergraduate: 2.9 Master: 3.4 Overall : 3.1 GRE: verbal: 590 Quant: 680 I am a non-traditional applicant with 10 years of research and industry experience in biotech and bioscience. Are these stats good enough for graduate programs in school such as: Stanford U, University of Washington, UCDavis, UC San Diego, Washington State, University of Arizona, UCI, and UCSF. Please fill me in on your input. Since, I have been out of school for a long time, my LOR will not be from recent professors, but will be from scientists whom I work with. Does that have a major impact on my chances? Does anybody in the forum got accepted into these schools and does any one know other good biomedical or bioscience graduate program out there? Please, any comments is welcome. Thanks
emmm Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 I think programs will like your research experience, but your Quant score seems a bit low. Given that you are older, you really do not want to give them any reason to reject. I found contacting programs and meeting with people very helpful. Perhaps you could get more useful feedback directly from the programs you are interested in.
