Leewa19 Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 I'm currently a senior BSW student at a high-ranked university in Virginia. I am going to be applying to several MSW programs as well as a few Speech-Language Pathology ones. I am currently planning on applying to George Washington and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities but I am nervous about my application. I have a 3.82 cumulative GPA and a 3.95 in-major GPA, and around a 1220 on the GRE (I took the new one and am still awaiting the official scores). By the time I graduate, I will have had 3 semesters of social work intern experience at a rehabilitation and nursing center, which is the type of facility I would like to someday work at as a Speech Pathologist. I have other work experience with the elderly and will have recommendations from professors as well as my field instructor at my internship and supervisors from the other jobs I have held while going to school and interning. Do you think my stats are good enough to get into these schools?? Any other schools I should look into (I want to stay in the DC/MD/VA area or Minnesota)?
SomedaySLP Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I think your stats look great! Those schools are both competitive so I would definitely add more to your list. I'm applying to University of Maryland at College Park and Towson U (both in MD) as two of my back-ups (I'm from MD originally) and both schools have solid reputations. No matter how strong your application packet is, I'd apply to at least 5 schools in SLP just because the field is so unbelievably competitive right now. I have what I feel is an extremely strong application (my GPA is a little lower than yours, GRE is higher, bilingual, lots of research experience, etc.) and I'm still applying to 7 schools. Best of luck as you're applying!
serif_starling Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I'm a senior in Psychology at a school in North Carolina. My stats are: 3.56 GPA (changed my major after my sophomore year, that's why overall is lower) Major GPA 3.88 GRE: 1360, 700 Verbal, 660 Quantitative, 5.0 on the writing section. Speech Related Stuff: I spent a summer working at a Camp for children with Autism, where I learned Applied Behavior Analysis. I also have logged over volunteering 60 hours in a special needs Sunday School. I have completed my 25 observation hours. Prerequisites Completed: Phonetics, Anatomy of Speech and Hearing, Audiology, and Speech Science. I have taken Child Development, which counts in place of language development for some schools. Leadership Stuff: Resident Advisor for 2 years, Vice President of the International Psychology Honor Society. I'm applying to all the in-state schools: UNC-CH UNC-G ECU Appalachian Western Carolina North Carolina Central University. Good luck to everyone else this application season!
Leewa19 Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, SLP-Allie! I actually just got accepted to GWU's SLP Re-entry program (my top choice) today so I am extremely happy and excited! My stats have improved a bit since that last post but I really think my statement of purpose and letters of recommendation helped me a lot! Good luck to everyone else applying! trevortiger and alicejcw 2
SomedaySLP Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Congrats! You're lucky you already have an acceptance in January, let alone from your top choice--I am hating this waiting game! Are you set on going to GW or still considering the others, should you get accepted to them?
Leewa19 Posted January 28, 2012 Author Posted January 28, 2012 Thank you! I did not expect to hear back this early at all but it is definitely a relief to know I am going somewhere in the fall! I'm pretty set on GW at this point but I would be happy at any of the schools I applied to so I definitely will weigh my options once I hear back from the others. Good luck to you! Waiting is awful so I hope you hear back very, very soon!! kathleenamcg 1
